August 2020 Ratings

August 2020 Ratings just released:

Ben FM LEADS WOGL.
Yes, it's the vanity 6+ numbers, but WBEN leads WOGL 4.5 to 4.2. Has Ben EVER been ahead of WOGL in it's history?

ALT 104.5 slips 1.3. I doubt MUCH of that could be attributed to the Woody Show launch already, but it probably didn't help.

WTDY, WPEN seeing some pretty tough numbers, both losing big to their competitors (WIOQ and WIP).

Take WPEN out of the mix and it’s not bad to be Beasley.

In fairness, everyone has their sore spots of course, but all things considered, that’s a collective decent vanity performance.

Beasley is killing it. WPEN still a sore spot- but no one expects a miracle there on 97.5.

WBEN must be in hog heaven beating WOGL, but I suspect this is an outlier book for them.

WRFF tried to give their audience a woody but it seems they said thanks but no thanks.

But really the big news should be that KYW-AM is in the top five. Shows that AM radio, despite everyone practically drooling over its death- remains important and viable. Hell even the flea powered stations like WHAT can get into the books.

The Breeze had a nice comeback, seems back to normal from a 2.8 to 3.6.

WHAT has a translator on 99.9FM. WEMG has a translator on 105.7FM. (Even WURD has a translator now at 96.1). I'd bargain that the majority of the listening for those stations are on the FM translator anymore, and the AM signal is only useful as the originating signal.

One station remains important and vital despite the fact that it's on AM. I don't think you can draw any more conclusions from that.

If AM radio was important and vital, you'd see more AM stations in the Top 10. KYW is the exception to the rule.

I cannot recall when the last time if ever Ben FM has beaten WOGL. They have actually been beating them in the 25-54 demo as well for a while I believe. If someone can confirm that such as David Eduardo.
I wonder how Ben is doing it? People on FB are saying because they are not playing 60s music. I totally disagree with this theory. I think it has everything to do with the fact that they do not play as wide variety of 80s and 90s as Ben plays. They just go deeper and I think people are getting tired of the safe route. Also, I think that it does not help that they are not live. WMMR and WMGK are live and local and are doing amazing. Just my thoughts.

What seems to be driving Ben FM is younger people. WBEN is Top 5 in 18-49. It's also Top 5 25-54. That means WOGL audience is getting older.

The problem Entercom has is if it wants to bring down WOGL demos, it will crash into WBEB, which is solidly in the middle of both 25-54 and 18-49.

Now Ben FM, is, and always has been mostly automated too. However there is a clear difference between to 2 when not live. Ben FM with its voice over guy have a constantly updated large library of sweepers.

WOGL on the otherhand is **song** VO Guy "WOGL, Nobody plays more 80's, **song** VO Guy "WOGL, (female VO) Nobody plays more 80's, **song** VO Guy "WOGL, **song** VO Guy "98.1 WOGL, Nobody plays more 80's. and its just basically that all night, everynight.

Keep in mind that agencies buy off ratings, not share.

So, using NYC as an example (pre-pandemic) there were:

2 stations with a 0.4 tied for #1
5 stations with a 0.3 tied for #3
8 stations with a 0.2
7 stations with a 0.1
All the rest have a rating of 0.0.

So, unless a station can move into the very top tier, being in the top 10 in the sales demo being bought is good enough. A single share point will not change the rating rank. What matters more is where that 0.2 or 0.3 is located on the age spectrum.

One of the issues is that most cities have a dozen or more FMs that fully cover the market. With a few exceptions, the average city has only one or sometimes two AMs that have full coverage day and night. Only a couple have 3 or more.

Chicago has 4 and two that almost make it

LA has three or four.

Houston has a marginal 1.

Phoenix has none.

Cleveland has one.

So in most markets, the sure winning formats of primary news/talk and sports are likely taken. Nothing left format wise, and in most places, no decent stations.

Philadelphia may have three. And up until maybe ten years ago, both KYW and WPHT were still hanging in. But WPHT has really cratered in the years since IQ Radio split the talk audience for a few years. So even though they may have one of the best signals in town, it is all for naught.

610 has as good a signal as 1210 due to the frequency; 560 is almost as good daytime but not at night.
