FM Reception Notes Meriden, CT 9/8/2020

While waiting for my Mom to come out of Boscov's at the Meriden Mall (formerly Westfield Meriden) this morning around 10:15AM I gave the FM dial a spin. The conditions were just right to pick up some out of the area stations.

94.5 WJMN Boston. Crystal Clear in Stereo. Then intermittent clear and fuzzy.

94.9 WJJF Montauck, Long Island. - Crystal Clear.

98.1 WCTK New Bedford, Mass. - Crystal Clear in Stereo.

100.9 WKNL New London, CT. - Fuzzy but in stereo.

101.7 WBEA Long Island. - Fuzzy. They were fighting with W269DE as every so often I'd get a blast of Spanish Music.

105.3 "Exitos 105.3" Manchester, Connecticut. - I don't know the call letters of this translator for WNEZ 1230-AM. In fact I don't know too many translator call signs. They were crystal clear and in stereo, though in my opinion their processing sucks. The music sounded very flat compared to other stations.

106.5 WBMW Pawcatuck, CT. - Fuzzy. In stereo.

107.5 WFCC Cape Cod. - Crystal Clear.

WERB is a deep fringe signal for most of Meriden. I lose it on my car radio well before the Route 5 exit. I haven't tried receiving it at the mall, but judging by the coverage map, reception there would seem marginal at best. A decent tropo opening would leave no trace of WERB.
 
There was a time when stations couldn't get calls that were the same as government agencies, or K/WUSA. That changed some time ago (WCIA is a TV station in Champaign IL)
 
I'm surprised that WERB-FM was ever given that frequency. Just 22 miles away is the transmitter for WYBC-FM 94.3 of New Haven.

I'm fairly certain that the Berlin High station was last on 97.3 FM. They were displaced when WZBG-FM of Litchfield signed on in 1989 or so.

Soft Rock 106.5 WBMW has a slightly larger coverage range than the other New London stations. In Glastonbury I can pick it up with a car stereo. But definitely surprised you could pick up 100.9 WKNL as far away as Meriden!

Back when it was called Westfield Meriden, I went to a Nifty Fifties Band concert on the top level of the parking garage there in the summer of 2009.

And back when it was Meriden Square, Tiffany played inside the mall. I didn't go.

The late michael collins from WQUN, and CT Radio historian i think was responsible for finding that 97.3 would fit in litchfield and getting WERB a new frequency.... but youre right about the timeline and frequency
