Isn't it about time.....WSB-AM?

At some point, CMG/Apollo will switch AM from a simulcast of the FM to it's own format.

Any word of this coming down the pike? It's been over a year since they dropped any reference to the AM (other than the legal ID) on the air.

Unless, of course, they have absolutely no other format idea available. (Can't do sports, wouldn't go another talk format to potentially hurt the WSB brand on FM.)

Don't they already split the signal for UGA sports, particularly UGA hoops during the week?

Also, they have been using the AM for supplemental, secondary long-form programming such as congressional hearings.

The stations that have split off the AM discover there's not much audience there. WMAL Washington spun off the AM as a sports station, with live and local mornings, and they get a .1 share. That's 1/10th of a share! Who cares?

Yes, it is worth practically nothing among the 25-54 sales target.

That's probably true, but WSB-AM is such a historic station, and what else could they do with it that would make money? Some stations, such as the former KXL-AM in Portland and WMAL-AM in Washington, have gone to sports with tiny ratings, but there's no hole in the market for another sports station on AM.

The last estimate I heard was 20% of WSB's audience was on AM. Though most of them might be older than 54, the combo shows up at #1 in Persons 6+. Is the 20% the difference between being #1 and #2? Yes, buys are not made on P6+, but it's nice to be known as the market's #1 station.

WSB AM needs to be like 740 Zoomer in Toronto...

https://www.zoomerradio.ca/

That will never happen. Music licensing is more expensive on a music station.. you still have to pay it on a news talk station, but its less

If its nothing but a jukebox, then all the radio geeks will complain theres no personality of reason to listen. Then when its Voicetracked, people will complain that "cant the company afford live talent"

The only reason Zoomer is doing what its doing is because its a private owner. Few corporate big AM's are running music.. there are a few, but not many. If there was a market for the Zoomer format in Atlanta, someone would already be doing it, plus its an old format and Atlanta isnt an old city

Amen my brother from another mother. Been to Atlanta many times and I know an Oldies format wouldn't work. Sorry about that.

Breaking up the 750/95.5 simulcast is unnecessary.

As duly noted earlier in this topic, the chances of a new format on 750 generating any sort of meaningful ratings or revenue is minimal. 750 helps fill in coverage gaps on the periphery of the market and still provides some contribution to overall AQH share & cume.

660 & 101.9 in NYC have simulcast for years, as have 780 & 105.9 in Chicago.

I say keep 750 as-is until a buyer comes along begging for the facility or AM band usage dwindles to negligible levels.

Cox did that because they saw more billing potential with a Latino format, which had been on a translator, than with a News and Talk format.

Correct. The market is now estimated to be 35% Hispanic, and there is some thought that the Census may find it even higher. Normally, the annual population updates are quite accurate, but the fact that most Orlando MSA Hispanics are Puerto Rican may hide even higher population because Puerto Ricans are born US citizens and many Puerto Rican names are not "obviously" Hispanic. There are Puerto Ricans with names ranging from Rickenhoff to Gautier to Gleason which makes counting rather hard.

So, how does WFLI (1070) Chattanooga do it? You can hear them here now that we're moving into the winter solstice. They seem to be doing well, selling spots.

Seems to me it would be less difficult to sell spots in a larger market. SO, how does WFLI do it and survive?
The overhead (salaries and electric bill) would be about the same.

House hold income for Chattanooga is $41K, and for Atlanta is $57K. Tennessee utilities are lower than Georgia.

It's easier to sell spots where everyone knows your name. That's Lookout Mountain TN.

They survive by keeping costs low, no debt, and good local contact. Harder to do in Atlanta.

There's a similar station just outside of Knoxville. It's kind of a hobby station for a retired radio guy. It's fun for him.

Easier to sell spots in a major market. There are clients who do blanket buys here. Never seen that in small market radio.
