When the AM revitalization translators were granted back in 2016, new owners were required to tie these translators to a specific AM station and rebroadcast that station for a minimum of four years. For some stations, that four year window is about to close.
Here in Madison, Mid-West Family Broadcasting's W249DH is tied to WHIT-AM through mid November (license to cover issued November 15, 2016). I'm hoping that once MWFB is no longer required to rebroadcast WHIT-AM, they'll switch W249DH to rebroadcast WRIS-FM. I enjoy listening to the Resistance, but their radio signal is pretty much useless here in Madison except for in-car, and even then it's pretty iffy. 97.7, on the other hand, I can pick up on radios in my house. I understand 97.7 allows daytimer WHIT to remain on air after sunset, but selfishly, I'd just like to be able to listen to the Resistance on a radio in my house. I also wonder how large the audience for classic country is in the city of Madison.
It will be interesting to see how many translators will be quickly peeled away from the AM stations they're now tied to as soon as the 4 years is up.
