Entercom Makes Cuts At Alternative & Country Stations

Entercom has begun another round of programming cuts today.

These cuts will be focused primarily on Program Directors and on-air talent at Alternative and Country formats with the beginning of a move towards regionalizing their operations. We’re told that midday and evening on-air shifts will be either regionalized or made national.

Note some of the staff members who have been removed by entercom has been released.

JIM FOX, DALLAS VP/Programming/Brand Manager:. FOX said, "Sometimes the music stops and you're without a chair, but WOW! what an incredible run I've had with this company! Many great memories of the teams in SACRAMENTO and here in DALLAS. A heartfelt thanks to DAVID, PAT, WEEZIE, JEFF and many others on the corporate team who I've had the pleasure of working with over these 17 incredible years with ENTERCOM.”
JORDIN SILVER, Morning Host at Alternative KRBZ (96.5 The Buzz)/KANSAS CITY, MO:
MANDY JAMES, Morning Co-Host at Country KMNB (102.9 THE WOLF)/MINNEAPOLIS:
MARK SCHECTMAN, Morning Drive Host at KVIL (ALT 103.7)/DALLAS for the past year, hosted Afternoons before that. Also hosted specialty show, "Locals Only" and all artist lounge performances.

Also Entercom recently went through management changes prior to these cuts.

Weezie retired, and a replacement was named. Other than that, the upper management is not particularly affected.

The funny part about this story is that in the midst of all the cuts and layoffs, I tuned in to Alt92.3, and hear Chris Booker! What's HE doing there? He was fired from LA's KAMP in April, and has been off the air for 6 months. Today he's back at WNYL. He was saying that it's good to be back at his old stomping grounds and playing music again.

Following the restructuring of Entercom’s Alternative and Country stations last week, the new on-air lineups debuted this morning.

The lineups feature mostly regionalized morning shows, voicetrackers in middays, either local or regional hosts in afternoons, and national evening and overnight shows with “Alt 92.3” WNYL New York and 106.7 KROQ Los Angeles being the primary originating hubs.

Four morning shows will be regionalized. WNYL’s “Cane & Corey” will now be heard on WLKK Buffalo, WSFS Miami, WQMP Orlando and W285EJ Baltimore. KROQ’s “Stryker & Klein” adds KITS San Francisco, KVIL Dallas and KRBZ Kansas City. KXTE Las Vegas’ syndicated “Dave & Mahoney” will be heard on KBZT San Diego. KNDD Seattle’s Gregr will now be heard on KNRK Portland and KKDO Sacramento. The newly rebranded “Alt 102.1” WRXL Richmond retains the regionally syndicated Elliot in the Morning based at iHeartMedia’s “DC101” WWDC Washington DC.

The aftershocks of Entercom’s revamping of their Alternative and Country stations last week continue to be felt as at least four of their stations will launch new brands on Monday.

All of the rebrandings will be to the “Alt” identity used by the majority of Entercom’s stations in the format. Making the switch are:

“96.5 The Buzz” KRBZ Kansas City to “Alt 96.5“.
“107.7 Alternative Buffalo” WLKK/W284AP Buffalo NY to “Alt 107.7/104.7“
“XL 102” WRXL Richmond VA to “Alt 102.1“.
“X107.5” KXTE Las Vegas NV to “Alt 107.5“.

Rising to Regional Vice Presidents of Programming are WNSH New York PD John Foxx and KSON San Diego PD Kevin Callahan. Here are some for the changes announced for Entercom's country stations.

Despite being promoted as airing on all of Entercom’s Country stations, the new “Katie & Company” midday show hosted by Katie Neal will not air on “106.5 The Wolf” WDAF-FM Kansas City. Ali Stephens remains in the 11am-3pm slot there. Former WYCD Detroit afternoon hosts Rob Stone and Holly Hutton’s new “Rob & Holly Show” will air on all of Entercom’s Country stations in evenings.

Replacing Rob & Holly in afternoons at WYCD will be former midday host Sean ‘Coop’ Tabler and evening host Sarah Thomas. Tabler continues in mornings at CHR “96.5 TDY” WTDY-FM Philadelphia and will also track afternoons for “102.9 The Wolf” KMNB Minneapolis and “Y108” WDSY Pittsburgh.

Another multiple market afternoon show will air along the west coast. 103.7 KSON San Diego afternoon host Kimo Jensen has been teamed with former “95.1 K-Frog” KFRG Riverside CA midday host Heather Froglear. The duo will air on those two stations plus 107.9 KMLE Phoenix, “99.5 The Wolf” KWJJ Portland, and “100.7 The Wolf” KKWF Seattle.

We've got something new for you. Less is MORE – less commercials and more music discovery

We'll never play more than 2 minutes of commercials at a time. That's our promise. The 2 Minute Promise®.

Got the above in an email blast from an Entercom station, ALT 94.9, here in San Diego. Is this being rolled out nationwide to all the ALT or country stations since those two formats were taking on all the changes being made this week?

I should also add that 94.9 had a long running promo called commercial free Mondays that went away starting today (Sept. 15) and some folks on the social media channels are a bit miffed and I kinda understand why. https://alt949.radio.com/commercial-free-mondays

The 2 minute promise is now on all Entercom alternative stations.

From InsideRadio.com: As part of what the company says is a commitment to putting the listener first, the “Two-Minute Promise,” which keeps spot breaks to no more than two minutes, is being expanded to all its alternative stations.
