KPRC Files to Co-Locate with KBME

I just saw the filing which proposes moving KPRC from its current location on NE 610 next to the rail yard to the KBME site in the NW off of 249. The proposal seeks to go from 5 kW day and night to 7 kW day and 4.3 kW night. The day signal will remain non-directional. Glancing at the included maps, daytime looks a little better and night looks a little worse (specifically if you are a listener in Brazoria County.

The combination makes sense, especially if they have a buyer for the large tract KPRC currently uses.

Seems to me that iHeart already sold its towers to Vertical Bridge a few years ago. I thought that sale also included the tower land.

I had been wondering recently about 950 keeping its current array. The KBME location is better situated for dumping RF over the city and into the Gulf. Could allow for a further power increase in the future. Also gets the signal much closer to the market's major growth areas.

Of course KPRC is barely there in the ratings; would not surprise me if iHeart eventually dumps it, or moves SportsTalk there from 790 if it is the better market signal (790 has some holes.)

Looking through the current program lineup, it doesn't seem like their (i) Heart is really in it. Maybe 950 is where BIN will end up in Houston.

The strip of land on the 610 side of the property has already been slated for Office development..which would cause RFI issues and pattern distortion at night...figured this was coming

Was curious what would go on the site. The current 950 facility is in a rather gritty industrial area, with a hodgepodge of older semi-rural homes to the north. Didn’t seem suitable for new apartments or condos.

Google Street View shows a rather rundown transmitter building for 950, but a lot of such facilities look that way.

The 790 site is 13 miles to the northwest. In a “right angles” directional sense it is ten miles further west and eight miles further north. Should improve reception of 950 in the growing northwest and western parts of the market, as well as in Montgomery County. Elsewhere the change will probably be a wash, unless the 40% daytime power increase results in minor improvements.

I don’t think the move is going to help the abysmal ratings, though, unless iHeart has some new plans for 950.
