exactly. FOX would have kept it on FOX til the end
But due to a couple red flags at the end the race did not finish until 5:43 CDT
My CBS station is still listed as having news at 7pm. Maybe the guide updates tomorrow.
NBC getting a TON of criticism for switching to news before race was over. Was it the wrong decison?
Listings generally don't change on weekends because there usually isn't anyone working to do it. My listings still have the normal lineup on WCBS and WFSB as well. They'll probably be updated by noon tomorrow.
It depends on who you ask. It was a very close finish. So the NASCAR fans are not happy. Shades of Heidi. Also on NBC:

It's a pretty poor decision for a sport like NASCAR where the standings can change unexpectedly at any time, unlike football or baseball where the game is usually a foregone conclusion several minutes before it's over.
Obviously a lot of NASCAR fans called our local NBC affiliate, because during the news tonight they explained that the local station was not responsible for the decision. They said NBC had to switch in order for Sunday Night Football to begin on time. "Please stop calling us!"
On the East Coast, the black-ish election special and 11:00 newscasts were delayed about 15 minutes due to NBA Finals overrun. On the West Coast, black-ish wasn't affected unless a station opted to air it right after the game. KABC and KGO respectively aired it at 8:00 and 8:30 Pacific as scheduled, even when they had postgame programming in between that they usually run for the full time.
Who knew there were so many unable-to-afford-cable folks among NASCAR fans!
This kind of thing still happens in Canada. Rogers Cable broadcasts CBS Saturday College Football games via simsub. Since they're only "scheduled" until 7:00 PM Eastern, the games almost-always abruptly get cut off at that time and the feed switches to Wheel of Fortune on Canada's YesTV. There are always complaints on Twitter when this happens. Two weekends ago, when CBS's game ran to 8:00, Rogers switched back to the game at 7:05, but then the game got cut off again at 7:30 for Jeopardy!, and it never came back.
NBC didnt have to switch out. Football pre-game didnt start for almost an hour. So what if the news is JIP'd?
Huh using that theory maybe on Saturday when Notre Dame plays at 6:30 if the game runs long (past 10) I highly doubt that NBC will shift it to NBC SN so news can start on time

or folks who have cable but NBC SN isnt in the package they have or not carried at all?
or folks who have streaming services and NBC SN is not part of it?
or folks who recorded the race (to watch later) assuming the whole race would be shown on NBC?
It depends on the cable system but sometimes NBC SN isn't in basic cable.
NBC, I would think, is paying more for Notre Dame football -- at least on an event-for-event basis -- than it is for NASCAR. NASCAR isn't half the property it was a decade ago.
I recall one instance around this time last year where an afternoon College Football game on NBC that was scheduled to end at 6:00 ET/5:00 CT ran about 20 minutes over. They aired the game in its entirety, and all NBC affiliates ran their 6:00 newscasts or program from 6:20-6:50, and NBC produced a 10-minute edition of Nightly News, resulting in 7:00 programming starting on time everywhere.
