Billy Joe Shaver Dies at 81

It's a bad week if you like Texas-based singer songwriters. Billy Joe Shaver died today at age 81:

Another good one gone. Like Jerry Jeff Walker, Shaver never broke through to mainstream country radio, but also like Walker, he had a major chart hit, albeit not a pop crossover: John Anderson's "I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I'm Gonna Be a Diamond Someday)," which hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in mid-1981.
