1240 WHVN is back!!!

1240 WHVN is back under a special STA from the FCC using a long wire at 600 watts from the studio site and I must say the signal at my house is great! Hats off to the engineer whoever it is. They are airing the standards format that was on WAVO. This was started I'm told on November 2nd yet no word of it here.....

The station was sold, but this also appears to be an attempt to keep the license alive too.. the 6 month STA expired 10/27, and you can have up to a year but who knwos what theyre thinking. I bet the standards format is just to keep the finals modulated

Looking at what you posted it would appear to be just a minor ownership change. Not exactly a total sale. WHVN INC and GHB INC is basically a basically a name change. Same VP listed for both.

Not sure it was a sale from the document you referenced. Looks likes just a minor change. Same VP listed, might be some different principals?
 
One thing is for sure the night time signal is awful. Probably due to not having ground radials.

When WIST went off the air when I was a student at UNCC I could hardly hear anything. At UNCC!

How did that station ever succeed? I didn't know at the time WSOC was actually on that frequency back in the early days of rock and roll, but then it was a few years after they moved when Big WAYS finally made their switch and everyone could hear it.

I wish I had known this last week when I went to Concord.

I would go to UNCC tomorrow except for two things. COVID will keep me from using the library, as far as I know, and heavy rain. It has been a tradition for me to go there on the day Veterans Day is observed so I won't forget and go to a library that's closed.

I do plan to go to Concord next week and I'll hope for the best, though power lines are bad even there. At least I won't hear the alien from Zerblatt talking over the music near Carolina Mall (that's WRNA 1140).
 
I should have added one detail. WIST played its last song at night.

I had no trouble with WAYS, WAME (WGFY) or WSOC (WYFQ).

What exactly is the point of playing music on WHVN? How is anyone ever going to know? It's not like the fans go to a site like this one.

I need to find a way to go to Charlotte. I was told I couldn't go to any of their branch libraries but every other library I go to that isn't connected with a college is letting people in again.

The point is a station that is on the air with some kind of programming stands a better chance of selling compared to one that's off the air. The license is for sale, buyer will have to find a transmitter site. They are operating with a temporary arrangement on the STL tower which gives them a less than optimal signal but at least it's on. Plus I believe the FCC only allows a station to be off for just so long before they have to go back on or turn in the license, they can't stay off indefinitely.

A station can't stay off, even with proper notifications, more than a year without extenuating circumstances. For example, a station that was destroyed in a flood and then had the site declared a flood zone and can't get zoning or permits or other go-aheads through no fault of their own can show intent and pending permit processes and stay licensed for years.
 
However long it lasts, the music sure does sound good. I'm still hearing songs I never heard before, and those songs sound great.

I was worried I couldn't pick this up in Concord because the signal was so bad, but it's actually not bad at all. Power lines cause serious problems, though. But around Carolina Mall I am not hearing interference from WRNA.

I was thinking about trying it at home once I realized the signal was better than I expected, but it's probably too close to dark now. I've only got the one radio that will work.
 
It's statutory (meaning set in law and the commission my not grant an extension) that a station can only be off the air under an STA for one year. After that the license is voided and the station gets a "D" for deleted in front of the call letters. I just went through this with one of my clients. We got the station back on the air and saved the license by 6 hours. Whew!

WHVN went off the air March 31 and came back November 2.
 
Except for the Christmas music, the target audience today seemed to be 90-plus. But don't anyone tell me not to enjoy it because I did!

To quote one of the songs I heard, "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets." And I'm Lola!
 
I wasn't able to listen today because I've been out of range since late yesterday, but when I was listening I did hear "Sway" and "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" by Dean Martin and one other song by him, "My Cup Runneth Over" by Ed Ames, "Try to Remember" by Robert Goulet, "Secret Love" by Doris Day, "All Alone Am I" by Brenda Lee, "Till Then" by The Classics (I'm assuming since I have no way of knowing for sure), and by female artists I can't identify "Hooray for Hollywood" and "Whatever Lola Wants". I recognized the voices of Steve and Eydie singing about having nothing in common. The Chipmunks sang the song we all know. I think it was Mariah Carey on "All I Want for Christmas Is You", and Trans-Siberian Orchestra and the kids did "Christmas Canon". I mentioned "The Way We Were" by Barbra. I think I'm remembering that Andy Williams sang "Happy Holiday". A male vocalist sang "Charade", which I know as a Henry Mancini song with that Ray Conniff sound.
