Rockin' Randall gone from WAAI Hurlock

Announced on his Facebook page, Randy Tucker's Call-in Country Request Show, a mainstay of radio on the mid-shore for 24 years, will be no more. Sounds like station owner WBOC pulled the plug. This was basically the last live, local programming on the station which is otherwise satellite classic country. Could this mean format change is coming? Personally I'm hoping not.

WAAI plays the oldest country music on the shore, maybe the demographics not paying the bills anymore? WBOC also owns oldies 107.1 The Duck, again aging demographics? Sadly two stations that could flip to younger formats for more advertising revenue. But also a small market with so many signals trying to do the same.

Demographics are not very important in small markets. The "no over 55" dictate is usual at ad agencies, but there are few agency buys in markets that size. Ratings may be used as part of a sales presentation, but they are not the main part of a local direct sale.

A more likely reason for that particular show being cancelled is to save money during the pandemic. WAAI is not even located in the 4-county Salisbury-Ocean City market, and it is a very low biller, ranked 26th in the market. It's sister, the Duck, is also not in the MSA for the market but has had steady billings for the last decade!

Per his Facebook page, Tucker's show is resurfacing on LP FM WHCP, Cambridge. I've honestly never tried to tune them in from my home in Federalsburg but I was in Easton tonight and could tune them in with static while sitting still.
