What do market observers think is the reason 710, long an also ran, is finally earning decent listener counts?
And....WABC 770, long a superior performer to WOR, now has only about half of WOR's number (albeit WABC is on an upward swing as well).

Funny...I noticed a similar jump last month, and I was told it was ratings wobble, and had nothing to do with the station.

My point then as now is that WABC has made numerous programming changes, including the adding of oldies on the weekends, and the station has barely budged.

Meanwhile WOR is doing what it's always done, and it has almost doubled its share since the summer.

Clearly the folks at WOR know the NYC talk audience better than WABC.

I feel it's more a "Conservatives need a friendly voice telling them what they want to hear" situation leading up to the election, and WOR offers the bigger name national hosts (Rush, Hannity). WABC seems second fiddle with their lineup. We'll see if WOR holds that ratings now that the election is over.

The interesting part about that is neither WINS nor WCBS received a news bump from the election. Nice increase however for WNYC.

One might think Bill O'Reilly, Rudy Giuliani, and Bernie Karick are friendly voices. Maybe not friendly enough.

I wonder if WABC is doing enough to let people know what they're doing.

WOR had a spike starting in Week 4 of October and peaking in Week 1 of November but declining bit by bit the final 3 weeks of the November survey period (which is mostly in October, anyway).

This looks like an anomaly. The peak lasted two weeks, and then began to decline.

That's what you said last month. Meanwhile the trend continued. The anomaly might be the election.

Yet why does it help WOR and not other stations? What (besides Rush) is specific to WOR?

I think you have to look at everything. The brand. The rise of TSL by the P1 listeners. The addition of short-time/term fringe listeners. Even the signal strength in pockets that were lightly engaged, but knew where to easily turn and catch content that was somewhat consistent, but had not tuned it recently. Too me, this would be like "The Big Game" on a sports station. People are going to listen as the road to a decision comes in to play. Who is going to win? Am I right about my thinking or vote? The discussion changes. It's not the last 3.5 years of the same old conversation. Then, as you continue to listen for a few days or weeks, the reality sets back in and you probably will see a decline as people take a break. You may see a spike again in January for an entirely different set of reasons. I think the content won and people went to this source over the others. Have you guys seen the real numbers, CUME, TSL etc? That may well prove me wrong, David. It's just seems like a spike based upon actual response to tune in.

WINS and WCBS-AM are all news. They really don't compete with the talk stations like WABC and WOR. WNYC is also mostly talk other than drive times. WNYC is also the only non-conservative of the bunch. I could see why they spiked a bit as some people (Biden voters) probably didn't want to see the pro-Trump talk and wanted to know what was going on.

Rush and the other syndicated conservative talkers with big names, like Hannity, are getting a lot of national attention and people tune in to see what they think.

I think it was 1992, when Bush Sr was running against Bill Clinton, I made SURE I tuned into Rush the day after the election. Rush (who wasn't so full of himself back then) said he loved the fact that Clinton won because he'd "have material for the next 4 years.) People want to know their thoughts and reactions.
