Early Local US TV Mascots

James Gabbert the former GM of KTZO-TV/KOFY-TV 20 San Francisco was considered the mascot of the station along with the dogs and cats that appeared on the station ID at the top of the hour or before the start of shows in the 1980's and 1990's under his leadership.

Wnuv also did one in the 80s

Three that come to immediate mind was a cartoon pelican for KFMB/channel 8 in San Diego who appeared on billboards in the city and later in animated station IDs, a Scottich terrier named "Wagga" for WAGA/channel 5 in Atlanta, and an ersatz Felix the Cat for WMAZ/channel 13 in Macon GA.

A very long time ago (close to sixty years ago now), KTHI channel 11 (now KVLY) in Fargo, ND had a long-legged girl named "Katy High" (hence the call letters) as their mascot to promote their then-new 2,000 foot tower. At the time, it was the tallest man made structure in the world.

Note that this is something that I read about, not something I saw -- it's before my time. But when I read about it, it stuck in my mind for the incongruity of the tallest man made structure being up in North Dakota, a distinction held by that tower from 1963 until 1974. They built the tall tower because it was the only way for a station in that region to reach enough viewers to attract national advertising.

WKBW used a bunny rabbit back in 1958
