In the Still of the Night

I had never heard of the song when Ronnie Milsap did "Lost in the Fifties Tonight". Later, I found out it was based on the song by The Five Satins (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRb1-SAAIzs).

In a situation reminiscent of what happened when I was telling people on the site about hearing Huey Lewis and the News and a jewelry store, I have made an amazing discovery about this song.

This morning on the standards station in Charlotte (yes, standards! Real standards! Okay, a few oldies and a few AC tunes as well, but MUCH more traditional than America's Best Music https://www.radiodiscussions.com/showthread.php?730411-1240-WHVN-is-back!!!) I heard "In the Still of the Night", a Cole Porter song.

I was looking it up to see who might have done it, and I found there was a version by Dion of Dion and the Belmonts. So I went to Youtube which often has these songs, and ... it was the Five Satins song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SLq6CzH0S8&ab_channel=DionsDoll). It is credited only to Dion, though there are backup singers that are great. Is it possible he did both? I checked and it was, but this song is by Dion and the Belmonts (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvpqfGwDdW8&ab_channel=bisindie54).

The Huey Lewis song I heard was "But It's Alright" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IdTMq2ZLJA). I assumed the title was "It's Alright" but someone on this site explained to me that this was the name of the Curtis Mayfield song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Du9pCalSCU), and what I had heard was the J.J. Jackson song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBW9Gt2ha44). However, Huey Lewis and the News also did a version of the Curtis Mayfield song which was amazing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI7qhV36FQ0&ab_channel=Joguar).

Huey Lewis and the News were great doing older songs or their own new stuff. Excellent group.

Dion Songs

Dion did both songs. The Cole Porter song was released as a single. The 5 Satins song was an album cut. The Satins' song was sometimes listed as "In The Still Of The Night (I'll Remember)" to avoid confusion.

I noticed it wasn't listed under singles.

Wikipedia has a claim that the Five Satins song is "In the Still of the Nite" for that reason. There was some weird explanation that I removed because it didn't make sense and anything unsourced can be removed.

The fact of the matter is song titles can't be copyrighted, and it's possible to have multiple songs with the same title. "Time After Time" is one example.

The Ronnie Milsap song based on the Five Satins song uses the title "Lost In The 50's Tonight (In The Still Of The Night)" and that is from the record label copy. So technically the spelling doesn't follow the license. The Milsap song also credits Fred Parris as one of the writers.
