Weekend Weather on 3/5

Well, it appears that Monica Garcia is doing the weather on Saturdays. However, Sundays have been a mixed bag. Paul Horton had been doing weather for the past 2 or 3 weeks. Then, yesterday, Kim Powell (!) did the weather on the evening newscasts. On the 5:30pm, she seemed reasonably comfortable and actually better than Garcia. This may have just been a holiday weekend thing (since Paul did the weather on Friday). As brian4 mentioned previously, it takes a spreadsheet to figure out what they're doing.

But why does anyone outside the on-air person's family care? Weather is weather is weather.....at least in good old Central Arizona.

C'mon, it takes great skill to read all those temperatures in such a short period of time! It is important to know that it is 72 in Maricopa, but only 69 in Anthem. ;)

Oh yes, and squeeze in that there has not been any measurable rain in 128 days, which is tied for the 14th driest stretch of days since records started in 1894....

I think it's interesting from a personnel staffing point of view. It would seem Meredith didn't have a short term plan on replacing Ashlee DeMartino or Heidi Goitha when they released them. The Noon News still has a hodgepodge of anchors.

They could appoint a noon anchor (but likely would have to PAY them more). There are plemty of candidates at the station. These days, the noon news is not very important in the scheme of things. So, they could just stay with rotating anchors.

As for weekend evening weather, that's a tougher issue. All of their weather talent was focused on weekday evenings or any morning. Weekend evenings might seem like a demotion of sorts. I guess they are training Monica Garcia and, perhaps, Kim Powell (who did a surprisingly decent job on Sunday). If Meredith really wanted to save money, I'm surprised that they didn't eliminate one of the weekday evening mets (Royal, Sean, or Paul).

Perhaps that is coming in the not too distant future. Although all three do a great job on the weather it may be that retirement is around the corner for some of them. Meredith will let it happen that way if it does. Showing people the door is not good for morale.

Kim Powell is doing the weekend evening weather now (I assume Monica Garcia is on maternity leave).

I have noticed that Paul Horton has been doing live reports in the evenings, rather than weather forecasting. I wonder if that is a temporary thing or a permanent change.

Garcia is still doing field reporting. Maybe Monica or Meredith felt she wasn't a good for weather. Also could be, since Monica is pregnant and will be on leave for a couple of months, get Kim started now as the medium-to-long term solution.
