Jaimie Dupree out at WSB/Cox

Someone will pick him up. Voice or no voice, Jamie's a walking Library of Congress.

Trump was all-hands-on deck. DC journos were indispensable.

What else is on the Cox chopping block? Is a traffic copter cost effective?

The presidential election is over, and between COVID-related billings decreases and Apollo belt tightening, I suppose Mr. Dupree was not considered an "essential employee" at this time. I hope someone picks him up, but what radio company is increasing its news investment right now?

WSB is a joke to me, they are so right-wing it is un-listenable....

Yet WSB outbills the #2 station by nearly 50%, and is #1 12+ and top 5 or better in 25-54.

I knew his voice would be a problem when his contract came up for renewal. You could get text to voice software (which is what he's doing) to replace him.

I don't think that is true about WSB being ultra-right these days. There's the Von Hasseler Doctrine which is libertarian.

But, yes Dave, its all about $ale$. My guess is they're the top biller in the state.

There was once a liberal talk station, Air America on 1690, and they couldn't sell spots!

They are the 17th highest biller in the nation!

I've heard their sales staff just sits in their cubicle all day and take phone orders.

Like any other commercial station, WSB programs to get ratings and make money. And they're very successful at doing both.

Polishing laurels can't supersede pandemic billing, still minus 15% by Clark Howard's reckoning.

The book is over and firing season has opened up. A lot of payroll was shed.

Heck, WSB tried progtalk in the late 80s/early 90s and got clobbered by WGST.

Jamie is one of the best DC reporters on the air. Very trustworthy. I hope he lands on his feet somewhere.

You know how much of a professional he his? Follow him in Facebook and see the abuse he gets from people. And then read his responses back to them. Class. Respect. He should run for office.

You've minimized the effort that was required to make the computer sound like him.
"What they found was a Scottish company named CereProc, which agreed to sift through years of my archived audio, and build a voice - which, when paired with a text-to-speech application - would sound like me, and hopefully get me back on the radio." -
With my voice still gone, time for Jamie Dupree 2.0

Actually it's been sounding a lot more natural lately- a lot less choppy. Is this Jamie Dupree 3.0?

Unfortunately, it's unlikely he will get another radio job. For example, he would be great on NPR. But correspondence don't just file things. They are often used live on their longer form programming like Morning Edition and All Things Considered. I doubt his computer program could help in that situation.

He is an incredible journalist and hopefully will land on his feet somewhere. He's been on Capitol Hill for many many years.

He recently started his own daily newsletter. I guess he's hoping to keep his finger on the pulse, and bring some money in through it. It's free right now but he says he may start charging $7 to $8 per month at some point. I have already subscribed and will keep it, even when it turns pay.

If you're a content creator, you'll always have something to do. You might have to come up with your own source of funding, but most veteran reporters have established contacts and sources, so they can continue working.
