AM Frequency of the Week - 980 kHz

Here in San Jose, there is a lot of noise, as with 970, but a few stations can be dug out of the mud.

CKNW out of British Columbia makes it way down here ( but fades for long periods, before coming in strong for brief periods ). I'd say this is the most dominant signal, even though it fades to a weak signal 90% of the time.

KWSW out of Eureka, California. Its a very very weak 500 watts off two towers, but the music is there.

There is regional Spanish music that can be heard, but I do not know which one ( I have two Spanish stations close by ). It may be KFWB out of Los Angeles since its music and not talk.

Actually, WONE doesn't protect CFPL as well as a III-A would be. CFPL gets interference from WRC/WTEM primarily. Recently I found an AM study on CDBS which showed all the NIFs. I'll see if I can find it again. At one time, WONE was directional in the Daytime, later nondirectional in the Daytime. It blasts WCUB in Two Rivers, WI at Night. I suspect that DA Proofs of Performance and supplemental conductivity measurements were used to allow WONE to go nondirectional Daytime.

WONE went from 5 kW DA-2 to 5 kW DA-N in late 1969. I would assume that the radiation toward Cincinnati increased at that time, since the Day and Night Patterns most often were similar in those Days, and the Night Pattern favored the North.

I'm going to guess that WONE's night pattern has been the same since before 1969. They've had a good nighttime signal here in the Chicago area for as long as I can remember. Meaning since I started DXing in the early '60s.

East Tennessee: Days....if anything (with WNML next door on 980) either WWTB, Bristol VA or WYFM, Nashville. WONE, Dayton is in most sunrise/sunset and daytime skip periods.

Night: A hodge podge that can include WYFM and WONE.

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio area. WONE, obviously but in the south suburbs I had reception of WYFM underneath.

Daytime, a faint WPRE from Prairie du Chien, WI. Nighttime is very cluttered. Usually hear KSGM Chester, IL, WONE Dayton, OH, and sometimes WITY Danville, IL.

WPRE has been on my wish list for years. I've only heard them in the daytime driving through Prairie Du Chien and environs. I've also never heard KSGM, despite a pattern that favors me. Apparently WONE here is just too strong for them to break through.
