CBS, Nickelodeon to simulcast NFC Wild Card game

CBS and Nickelodeon will simulcast the January 10 4:40 PM ET NFC wild card game. More about it here.

If one can get Nickelodeon, by definition one can get CBS. What's the point?

One question - WHY?? Doesn't make sense

If you read the article, it explains why. The goal is to reach a younger audience:

"The minute we brought it up to the NFL, they thought it was really a good idea because they are trying to reach a younger and more diverse demographic," McManus said. "This was a great way of adding to the presentation without in any way shape or form harming the CBS broadcast."

Practically speaking, it's stupid. When kids see something other than what they want, they'll either change the channel or watch VOD. In today's world, you can't force someone to watch something by putting it on their channel. That's like forcing a rap fan to like country music by playing it on their radio station. It's just going to make a lot of kids mad.

This is only possible thanks to the merger of CBS and Viacom. Nickelodeon is a Viacom channel. So it's called synergy. They could also put it on CMT, but that audience is already watching the game on CBS.

CBS isn't the only network doing something extra on wild-card weekend. NBC's prime-time broadcast on Jan. 10 will air on Telemundo and stream on Peacock. ESPN's broadcast will also air on ABC.

Apples, oranges, and rutabagas. NBC is putting their game on their Spanish-language network -- not a bad move. Disney wants a Super Bowl, so they have to put games back on ABC. There is no reason whatsoever that CBS needs to involve Nickelodeon. Kids that like football will watch with their parents on CBS. The rest won't care and tune elsewhere.

Synergy my fanny! 2000 is calling; they want their business model back.

What Keith said. Kids will watch the CBS feed with mom and dad and cheer on their team. This will likely not go well for Nick's ratings.

What makes you think kids are not interested in nfl football? If you ever get on instagram most of the nickelodeon demographic is liking sports related posts. And engaging in those posts. Perhaps nickelodeon is simply catering to their target demos interests.

possible carriage dispute with local CBS station?
CBS affiliates (Nexstar) are currently off the Dish Network due to the contract dispute. This may not be the reason the game will be Simulcast, but the NFL wants to grow its Empire. I doubt that kids looking for cartoons will care about the game (unless they translate the action into video game Avatars)...

Hopefully we Dish customers get this resolved well before the game. Even though the CBS affiliate we get isn't exactly top-shelf, it's the only option we have, as we can't get anything OTA. On a somewhat related note, Dish and other providers should simply give us new and temporary DMA assignments. A CBS station less than 35 miles from us as the crow flies is in the wrong DMA for us.

I don't know if ratings will suffer much. Prime time for Nickelodeon is morning.
A mostly low-risk one-off effort. If they get some learnings out of it, if it does reasonably well vis a vis the added investment, more power to them. And a dud is still learning something valuable in the low risk period.

Unlike what seems like a good number of message board types, kids will get over a one-off disruption.

kids today don't watch cartoons when they're told to by the networks like their parents and grandparents did, they stream them whenever they want whenever they're not in our yards

If the content concerns you, there are other viewing options.
Whats the big deal why are we all upset about one nfl game being aired on nickelodeon. Whats the difference if its on cbs or nick. Most every major carrier has nick so i dont understand why its an issue whatsoever.
