December 2020 ratings

2020 is definitely different. No big Christmas station winner here.

KQMV moves up slightly. KIRO and KUOW stay on top. The non-local Wolf takes a small drop.

Why hasn't iHeartRadio killed Kube 93.3 or at least the Morning Show and Afternoon? iHeart has laid off a number of bigger talent with better ratings in different markets.

It was dumb to bring KUBE back without putting in a full station restoration effort. Kill it for good this time.

It was dumb, and Hot 103.7 really took the place of Kube once they killed it. While they haven't killed it in the ratings Hot ratings are similar to Kube before they blew it up.

KOMO's pretty high on the list. I don't think I've seen KOMO that high on the list in years.

KOMO has been at the same place for the last few books. Due to everything going on people are more likely to watch and listen to the news more. It will be interesting to see if they say that high after the new president takes off.

Wow. If this weren't December, not sure how much there would be to see here, but the usual winner in this book all the way down to #9.

News was dominant with KUOW, KIRO, and KOMO continuing their string of strong numbers. Clearly in this book the pandemic and election shook up the typical ratings. Appears in Seattle going all Christmas early, which KSWD and KRWM did for this book did not work, though it did in many other markets. Wonder if they will flip after Halloween again next year to All Christmas, or wait until Thanksgiving and the Holiday book?

^^^^^ Hard to say. With a new administration, who knows what sort of new troubles may arise, news-wise. Also, we may not be out of the corona crisis until the end of the year, or even early 2022.

In a previous ratings post, I wrote about the struggles of KUBE, and how they may eventually be forced to explore other format options. Looking at the current landscape of radio in Seattle, I really don't think that any other format would fit better on 93.3. I know that the idea of FM sports has been floated before, but that doesn't seem realistic right now. This might be a good time to leave everything well enough alone, as long as it isn't costing the iheart too much in operating costs. It would certainly cost less to leave the format be and shutter some of their costs associated with 93.3 before making any dramatic decisions.
