FM Bandscan - Mount Spokane, WA (elevation 5,886')

Here's a bandscan I did at Mount Spokane back in July when I visited:

This particular bandscan was recorded on the east slope of the mountain, which is a good spot for Montana stations. I have two more bandscans on the way which cover the Northeast and Northwest slopes.

Receiver used was the SPARC SHD-TX2 with a dipole antenna (the one that came with my RTL-SDR) wrapped up around it to improve reception.

Below is a list of stations featured:

Nice Scan, I only do AM cause of copyright on FM
Thanks! I do FM mostly because it's easier to identity the stations I receive. I use iMovie to edit the video and clip out much of the copyrighted stuff.

Here's the second bandscan I did at Mount Spokane, on the northeast slope. Here, Missoula stations came in a bit better; and I caught a few FMs from Canada and the Wenatchee area.

KPQ-FM gets out everywhere. 6800 feet on Mission Peak really helps! And so does KFFM, where here the signal even multi pathed is nearly full 10 bars, 30 miles from Yakima. I've yet to hear Trail BC on 95.7 but they have been on my want list for years. And I'm surprised the Sandpoint 105.3 (with KSPT) came in with no sign of the KXLX translator down in Spokane, which is 10 miles closer.

Incredible work here! I'm still shocked that you were able to pick up anything from Montana. KPQ Is one of the most impressive signals on the east side of the mountains by far!

Sandpoint 105.3 is actually 105.3 The Beach, fed by KTPO-HD3. I was on the northeast slope of the mountain which blocks out the lower powered Spokane signals allowing for Montana and Sandpoint to come in.

Thanks! I was actually expecting to pick up Montana, considering the elevation and the proximity. Mt. Spokane is right next to the WA/ID line, less than 50 miles away from the ID/MT line, and only 130 miles from Kalispell - closer than Wenatchee, Tri Cities, and Yakima. Missoula is closer to Mt. Spokane than Yakima, and not much further than Wenatchee is. Plus, the high elevation makes it easier.

I guess I never realized how much closer you are to Missoula compared to other central Washington cities from Mount Spokane. I was also surprised that there was no significant bleed from KXLY since you were at their transmitter site. I'm looking for a light-weight radio I can use for bandscans while hiking. I might need to look into a SPARC radio!

I don't think SPARC receivers are made anymore, at least not the model I have (SHD-TX2). SPARCs can be found on Ebay though not very often. Sangean HDR-14 is a pretty good alternative, though there can be bleedover on adjacent channels.

I use the Sangean ATS-909X as you all know. Bleed is very minimal. I tested it in Yakima on Christmas and the bleed from KATS that normally occupied 95.3 was barely there, and K237GY Prosser (KZXR, which is now La Estacion de La Familia) was clear. Even KMLW-88.3 came in, albeit weakly...mind you I almost never heard that on the old G5 unless I was up on the Englewood/Scenic Dr hill.

I think that the Sangean might be a better option. I've seen a lot of bandscan videos on YouTube featuring an ATS-909X, and I think that could be a really nice upgrade. The HD capability of the SPARC is interesting, but I can honestly live without that feature. I'm very happy with the performance on my Grundig, but it just isn't portable enough for use on the go. I would really like a model that I can get into a backpack for remote use.

Here's the third and final bandscan recorded at Mt. Spokane facing west to northwest:

This side of the slope isn't as impressive as the northeast side, though I still get some long distances. I plan on going back up there this summer and recording a bandscan on the southwest or south slopes.

Below is a list of stations featured in this bandscan:
  • 88.1 - KYRS Medical Lake, WA (71 km / 44 miles)

Jump Off Joe is a hill above Tri-Cities which has several of the 100kw transmitters, including KFAE. He mentioned that 105.3, 94.9, etc. did not come in with the last scan. What surprises me here is KZAL weakly makes it, they are one of the more weaker Wenatchee stations here!

Thanks for Clearing it up

Should of Explained it

By the way, do any of the western Montana FMs make it, even very weakly, into the Spokane metro? Every time I look at FM Fool it shows KWOL 105.1 Whitefish MT at the bottom of the contour charts around Spokane and the suburbs, but I don't know if it makes it through the large range of mountains between Coeur D'Alene/Sandpoint and Kalispell.

No, I've never received any Western Montana FMs in the Spokane metro, though some Columbia Basin, Wenatchee and Palouse stations make it into the metro along with a handful of stations up north. Here's my DX log for Spokane: http://kaylonsphere.dx.am/dxlog/wa/spokane.html

Spokane just has too many strong locals; 7 of them IBOC/HD (formerly nine but KPBZ and KSFC turned HD off).
