WNCK Makes Rare NonComm Country Flip

I can't get any audio on the stream but the title of the song being played just now was This Is It -- Scotty McCreery. So I guess this will be a mainstream hit-country station, not some sort of Americana/alt-country/classic country mix, which you might expect from a non-comm. Do none of the mainland country stations (WKLB, WBWL, WCTK) put a good signal into Nantucket?

Good to see Great Eastern with a hand in this. I like their stations in the Upper Valley (NH/VT). They all sound very professional even with limited payroll and air staff.

Lemme guess are Honda commercials gonna start popping up at 89.5 Megacycles

No. 88 to 92 FM is reserved for non-profit licensees that operate non-commercial stations. They can sell underwriting, a way to acknowledge businesses that contribute to the station, but wording is strictly limited (take a listen to NPR or watch the end of a PBS program to hear underwriting). You tip is something like "we'd like to thank" or "support comes from..." generally at the beginning of the underwriting.

It's a pretty novel idea of running a mass appeal format, local information and such on a non-comm. Where it has been tried and worked successfully is in areas with a strong sense of community and plenty of locally owned businesses that want an affordable way to increase awareness of their business as well as demonstrating they take an active role in their community.

There is a way of doing the country format on a non-com, but this ain't it. I can imagine a lot of locals threw away their radios last month.
