Dustin Diamond Dead at 44

Stage 4 lung cancer that they just found 3 weeks ago.

Sadly he was never able to get away from the Screech character.

Sad to hear about anyone passing, especially that young, but it'll be interesting to see how his former Saved by the Bell castmates react. If I recall correctly he tended to try and profit from gossip surrounding that show, and his relationship with many of them was strained. He released a "tell all" book about the series and many of the stories contained within were less than kind and were denied by others involved with the show. At one point he also did some type of gossipy biographical show on TV and if I'm not mistaken, many of the stories were denied by the remainder of the cast, and they banded together to produce a different program to air opposite his, on a different network.

He seemed to also bounce around from one "reality" TV show to another for a while.

Most of the original cast (including Mr. Belding, the principal) appeared in a sketch on Jimmy Fallon a few years back to rabid response from the audience. Diamond was notably absent.

Sad news.

One thing I hate is that they let the character become more mature in a college version with the original cast, and then when they added new actors for Bayside High, they brought back Screech as an "administrative assistant" and made him more like Screech had been. It would have been better for his career if Screech had matured in that new version.

His path did not follow that of his fellow cast members. I think the character haunted him.
Maybe so, but there have been a number of actors who played similar characters who were able to move on to different and in some cases better roles. One good example is Jaleel White, who played Steve Urkel on the show Family Matters - complete with suspenders, flood pants, oversized glasses and high pitched, squeaky voice. After he played that character, Jeleel was able move on, wasn't typecast and he's still getting work today.

There are plenty of actors who can never get out of the shadow though.

Definitely a shocker. Mario Lopez has been grieving his loss. RIP Screech. Thanks for entertaining millions of teenagers every Saturday morning!
