Radio Predictions for 2021

The IHeart media consortium will be broken up and will spin off their stations to local groups. They'll be able to do a better job than the conglomerate can.
With rare exceptions, radio will survive by creating national formats, allowing local stations to insert limited content. Just a few local owner-operator stations will survive as long as there are local merchants and services that can buy ads.

Good amount of FM translators and lower AM station will call it quits there is no money running them no days
Translators in trouble will end up in the hands of FMs with HD channels. Some AMs may disappear, particularly daytimers and those that are not needed to support a translator.

Perhaps this is just wishful thinking, but at least one news/talk station or group of stations will come to their senses about carrying the conspiracy nuts who still are spreading Trump's lies and either cancel the shows or possibly change to a different format, and hopefully other stations will follow suit.

What might be more likely is a listeners group will sue some big owners for broadcasting false information.
If that brings it about then so be it. I've never been a big news/talk fan but I'm totally fed up with them now and would like to see it go away for good. But I know that won't happen.

I'd say it is wishful thinking. A big reason for the rise of Rush Limbaugh was that - in Bill Clinton - he had someone to rail against on air for 8 years. Obama energized the right and gave them plenty of metaphorical ammo while at the same time lots of actual ammunition flew off store shelves.

Cheer leading for Trump was enough to sustain the format, but with Trump out of the White House and a new administration in place, it gives them a convenient target. While it won't be Rush (eventually), rest assured that the most strident anti-Biden shows will be in the best position from a ratings standpoint to thrive. Keeping their core audience cheering for President Trump was a harder pull than keeping them angry about the latest thing Biden/Harris did or said. The hosts and stations might not be happy about who is in the White House, but they'll be happy to cash the checks.

Starting next month, Jesus Radio Selma will be turning 5 years old.

Excited over it. :)

Outside of this celebration, I don't see anything happening in this area.

Everything we have now will more than likely stay the same.

P.S. For those wondering, my own mix of CCM, SG and 3 Local Preachers is still working very well for me.

Right. They're going to flip to other formats, like gardening radio, or they'll start playing smooth jazz, golden oldies, or big band music. There may be some radio companies who hate conservative talk that would like to do that, but such formats would last maybe a couple weeks at best.

They're going to stick with what can pay the bills.

My predictions for this decade, including in 2021:

1. Classic Hits radio station will be more friendly to 90's hits.
2. AC will start getting rid of 80's music.
3. Hot AC will start getting rid of 90's music. (KSTP in Minneapolis already did this.)
4. 90's-style AC will come back as a special type of Classic Hits format or as Gold AC.
5. More indie music will be on commercial airwaves.
6. My radio format, Contemporary Freeform, will take off in the terrestrial radio sector.
7. AM will have a HUGE resurgence, thanks to All-Digital/All-HD AM.
8. Adult Top 40 and AAA will be more popular radio formats.

6. My radio format, Contemporary Freeform, will take off in the terrestrial radio sector.

I agree, mainly because of the influence of the streaming charts. Gen X and Gen Y don't listen to genres, but music.

I looked at the Hot 100 and I was surprised at all of the country songs there, driven mainly by Morgan Wallen.

I hate to say it but you're probably right. Like I said my comments were wishful thinking, not that I expect it to actually happen on any large scale.

7. AM will have a HUGE resurgence, thanks to All-Digital/All-HD AM.
I'd like to see that happen and perhaps make major music formats available on AM again.

Once again is this wishful thinking? But it's no worse than some of the other ideas posted here.

I know, it seems that AM is locked in place with whatever formats we hear presently, and that includes the shrill, hyper conservative talkers. Maybe HD MA3 on AM can make a difference -- who knows? After all, a considerable number of cars have HD AM capability. The country's population is still growing. Covid eventually will fade, and commuter traffic will eventually resurge to pre-covid levels. I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

I take it that you see the potential of my radio format.
