Lance Tidwell.

Lance Tidwell Departs Cumulus/Detroit

He shared the news on FACEBOOK this evening (2/9), writing, “As of TODAY, I am no longer with CUMULUS MEDIA. This is not the ending I wanted here and, like most separations, we don’t agree on the circumstances around it ... I am grateful for the work our teams have done. WDVD and WDRQ have some extraordinarily talented people, and it was a pleasure to be with them for two years.”

Considering that there was a bit of a story around about WDRQ, I wonder if that was to do with it..

What was the story? Did it have to do with the poor ratings? Possibly a change could be in the air?

WDRQ will become WJR-FM. The WDRQ call letters will be stored on WWCK (AM), which will become known as Q-107.3, The Auto City Has A Brand New Q. WDRQ will drop Country and begin simulating WJR (AM) 760. OK, I made that all up. But if it does happen, remember where you heard it first.:)

I really wish you were right, WJR needs to be on FM and WWJ needs to have an FM outlet as well.

Allegedly, Mr. Tidwell failed to remove Morgan Wallen's music from the WDRQ playlist in timely fashion. He did so within 24 hours of the directive being issued, but Jerry Del Colliano (as he often does) decided to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

I give Mr. Tidwell credit for launching a local morning show at WDRQ, something that should've been done much sooner. He also has done a decent job of navigating WDVD through somewhat choppy waters for the Hot AC format. (I won't lie, though. I enjoyed the overall sound of the station more when his predecessor, Robby Bridges, programmed it.)

He's a very good broadcaster, but he would've sounded better on their sister station, WDVD. I wish him well!

Kinda funny that the late 90's / early 00's era "93.1 DRQ - Detroit's #1 Hit Music Station" banner is still prominently displayed in the New Country 93-1 studio! :)

Maybe in ten years, but Cumulus needs a country presence in Detroit for sales. They do a ton of business there.

I am inclined to disagree. Cumulus lacks scale nationally for a Country presence in Detroit to be a true game changer. The more important angle is having a second female-friendly station to supplement 96.3 WDVD.

I hope the new PD finds a new voiceover artist. The current guy sounds like a relic from a 1990 hair metal station. His fake, obnoxiously synthesized, harsh voice is like sandpaper to my ears. Cumulus also uses him on their CHR station in Grand Rapids.

Perhaps the term "serendipity" applies here?

Mr. Tidwell's replacement has an impeccable resume. I'm stunned Cumulus was able to land David Corey! There's no chance his work at Cumulus will be limited to just two stations in Detroit on a long-term basis.

This is like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers acquiring the services of Tom Brady!

Extensive programming experience including:
- Kiss 108 Boston
- CHUM-FM Toronto (where he was PD for a decade before the station's numbers tanked and when it was still at the top of its game)
- Country 102.5 Boston
- VP of Programming with influence over 105 stations owned by Bell Media in Canada.

I'd be a little uneasy if I were iHM or Entercom, although Tony Travatto at iHM is definitely a talented programmer in his own rite, and Tim Roberts is no slouch, either (although at some point, the Entercom corporate buffoonery may become impossible to mitigate).

Aside: What on earth is wrong with 93.1 & 96.3's processing right now? The high end is cranked sky high, especially on 96.3. I can even hear the PPM pulses in the background when music is not playing. Today is the first day 93.1's audio has sounded bad, but 96.3 has sounded bad since late last week.
