Newly discovered SDR in Haida Gwaii, BC

Thanks, crainbebo, for sharing the new address as well as to Scott forthe heads-up on how to keep up to date with it.

Yay!

The site op is Walt Salmaniw of Victoria, and he has a cabin in Masset where the SDR is located. There have been multi-person DXpeditions there in the past. One in 2007 brought Bruce Portzer, Guy Atkins, Chuck Hutton and the late John Bryant together with Walt.

Earlier this week, in the mid- to late-morning BC time, I got some signals that I am pretty sure were Japanese stations (567 and 1287) and Korean stations (972 and 1242). I could definitely recognize the languages and I don't think they were from this side of the ocean. I was surprised that they were coming in quite a while after local sunrise. I figured that there might be others; the ones I caught happened to be in spaces where signals from North America were absent.

This receiver has had some really interesting results during the daytime that I think were thanks to very favorable daytime skywave, from as far away as Nome and eastern Alberta. I've been surprised to pick up stations a few times from as far south as the Portland area. This receiver has really been fun, and I bet I am just scratching the surface.

I'm guessing the station from Nome was KNOM. I've heard it often on this receiver at night. Sometimes the signal is very strong.
I haven't checked during daytime. This is a fun receiver.

I heard both the 780 and the 850 from Nome. On second thought, I won't swear that I heard both of them during Alaska daylight hours -- I may or may not have checked that it was broad daylight up there when I heard them. I think so. I really should log these things. Regardless, the range of stations from interior and coastal Alaska has been really just amazing on occasion during the daytime.

If it was religious then you heard the 780 from Nome.
