New Regional Mexican translator in SA, La Pantera on 102.3

KFLZ-CA is now off the air, and their format has moved to 102.3 FM K272EK. https://fccdata.org/?facid=&call=k2...=&lmspl=&party_type=LICEN&latd=&lond=&lang=en

I'm hearing Spanish Banda music right now. K272EK is licensed to rebroadcast KEDA, however KEDA is on 99.9 K260CC. Anyone know the originating station for 102.3, which still has 87.9 liners? KFLZ-CA was broadcasting on 87.9 since 2019 despite that being licensed for 87.75. Even the La Pantera website says 87.9 as of right now. HOME | La Pantera 87.9FM | San Antonio

BTW this station is also on Univision's 92.9 HD3, maybe Alicia Benavides's plan is to use 92.9 for a bass for her translator. It's funny one Regional Mexican station will support another competeing Regional Mexican station.

I'm guessing she's using 92.9 HD3 to originate programming for the translator. Translators can change the stations they're broadcasting on a dime and don't even need to immediately notify the FCC. They do have to notify, but it's not among the first things they have to do. I don't remember if 102.3 was moved into San Antonio as part of one of the those translator windows, but, if that's the case, it had to relay KEDA 1540 for at least four years. That period has probably passed by now.

LOL the translator came into San Antonio in 2008, never rebroadcasted KEDA until 2015, and since 2017 it hasn't rebroadcasted KEDA. So the primary station isn't all that important to them.

I've also heard this translator's running a 1000 watt transmitter into a 4 bay antenna, but that was in 2014 so it may have changed by now.

That would be a gain from the antenna that would give about 2 kw h&v in ERP. The most permitted is 500 watts ERP for any translator.

Are you sure, I always was told 250 watts ERP was the maximum for translators.

I think the "licensed" 500 watt translators are only in Alaska. Of course, there are no shortage of 500 watt translators (or more!) in Houston, Austin, and may other locations. The amount of blatant rule violating for translators and LPFMs is unbelievable.

As noted, Alaskan translators appear to be able to license for 500 watts. I should have stated that, except for there, it is 250 watts.

Yes, you are correct. I mistakenly thought that AK was allowed 500, but I find none licensed.

Hi, Alaska broadcaster/dxer/geek here :)

Translators in Alaska can have 1kw or more, apparently.

K220AD Valdez, AK is 1090 Watts at 66 feet
K257DB Anchor Point, AK is 650 Watts at 1188 feet

Translator rules in Alaska have been very different for many years. They are limited to 250 Watts, and i think in many cases, they dont have to be fed over the air

I should also add, KINY 800 Juneau has had FM translators for 20 years or more, and i think back in the day, they were fed by phone lines. Ours in the central interior are fed by satellite internet

Correction.. AREN'T LIMITED.. aren't limited.. to 250 watts

KFLZ-CA is now off the air, and their format has moved to 102.3 FM K272EK.
That's funny, must've been a temporary switch. KFLZ-CA is back on the air on 87.9 with La Pantera, and 102.3 is off the air completely as of right now...

Apparently not as 102.3 is now back on, retransmitting 87.9. I guess the eventual plan is for 87.9 to go away like all the other lPTV FM stations are. It's probably also in the plans for 102.3 to retransmit an HD signal somewhere, maybe 92.9 HD3 that La Pantera is apparently already on.

102.3 is listed as a relay of KEDA !540.

Relaying 87.9 isnt legal, thats a TV station, not a radio station. A translator in Anchoraged id that.. a channel 6 tv there went country music and had a translator.. but im not sure if the translator was rebroadcasting an AM as its parent feed or the 87.75 TV FM signal

Illegal or not, this 102.3 has been doing strange things since at least 2010 or so. Back then, or a year or two earlier it started relaying 87.75 calling itself ""La Z De San Antonio" and playing regional Mexican music. Then it relayed KROB 1510 from Corpus Christi for a few months in 2011 until it was paired up with KBRN 1500 in Boerne, however that wasn't legal as 1500 was apparently too far away. Then when the 1500/102.3 stopped at the end of 2014, 102.3 retransmitted KEDA for a couple years, maybe that was legal. But since 2017 KEDA has been on 99.9. Before La Pantera started on 102.3, between 2017 and now, 102.3 was relaying KYRQ from Natalia TX despite showing with the FCC it's relaying KEDA. Another thing, in 2014 someone told me a rumor that 102-3 was transmitting 1500 watts from the wrong type of antenna configuration.
In short, this translator's behavior is a lot like what goes on with Centro and others in Houston.

It's off again, I can hear KSAQ in it's place. 87.9 is still up.

Never mind the Spanish 102.3 is back on, apparently just a problem last night.
