Grayland WA SDR open (temporarily)

Grayland, WA is about 5 miles south of Westport, 20ish miles SW of Aberdeen on the Washington coast. I've been through here before. This is a long-time DXpedition site and so many great catches from across the Pacific have been made here. Bill Whitacre of Virginia is staying at Casa Sea Esta, a Vrbo site on the beach. Temporary, so you better listen to this while you can.

One of the biggest surprises to me is that KIRO 710 was kind of weak compared to some of the other Seattle AMs. Not bad, but I thought it would be a little stronger. Out of curiosity, what equipment does one need to set up their own SDR? I'm sure that it's very expensive, and quite complicated, but I always thought it would be interesting if you were in a unique location.

Interesting.. KCFM Florence, Oregon and their KinStar antenna did not make the list. I would imagine KARR would be a tough catch as well because of their cell-tower shunted antenna.

Heard a hint of country music on 650 tonight. Could that have really been WSM? That seems like a real long shot, and it certainly didn't last long with two other competing signals getting in the way.

Long ago when I was a kid I heard it on a multiband transistor radio -- so the signal can indeed make it here to the Seattle region. Naturally, that was before the other stations were added to the channel, but, still.... that signal is capable of making it here.

Doubtful. Try KMTI Manti, UT; far more common than WSM and at times, a pest at night.

I think it was KMTI now that you mention it. It would be interesting to catch WSM someday, but it doesn't seem very likely with so many powerful 650s on the west coast.

Heads up - KGNW is off the air for maintenance and it REALLY sounds like KJR is off too from here in Ellensburg...

Thanks! I did briefly catch WBAP on Grayland. In other DX news, Key West had a good signal from WGN & WBBM. Even WLS could be heard below Cuba. WWL was in clearly on Key West even in their null. On Hawaii I heard WGN briefly above the noise level. KKOH was too strong on 780, but I did hear WBBM weakly underneath.
This was all between 12:20--1:00AM CST on Feb 27.

Thanks for the heads up about 820 and 950! Haven't been able to catch much of anything else on these frequencies, but it's cool to have those channels open for once.

Where I was in Laramie, WY for 2 years, I did hear WSM several times.. and Laramie is just 40 miles west of KGAB 650 Cheyenne... 850 Watts and 3 towers at night but pointed right at Laramie

HEre's some audio.. the talk is KGAB, the music is WSM:

I think that KLDY is officially off the air. I was driving through Lacey just the other day, and didn't hear anything on 1280 whatsoever. I wonder if they will be coming back at this point.
I also thught I had read somewhere that KLDY was gone.

I'm looking forward to checking out that SDR myself. Hopefully, I won't wind up being late to the party. Anyway, in the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone has heard Hawaii on the rig.

Unfortunately, it looks like the SDR is now officially shut down. It's too bad, because the coast is always one of my favourite regions to DX the dial, and it was so convenient to have access to a way to listen all of the time without ever making the drive!

Looks like Bill has packed up to go home. Did anybody catch much info on what antennas he was using? I just saw a mention of a KAZ on the website for the virtual DXpedition. I'll browse more later.
