WNTY 990-AM turns 50

Streaming, my friend, streaming.

I know that you can stream the broadcasts online but my point was that if you are just taking a sample of people listening over either the FM or AM airwaves, you'd get far more listeners from the opponents of Southington than you would from the opponents of Cheshire.

Most people are first going to find out about the broadcasts by hearing them when passing by 96.1 or 990 on the dial in their car, and then after that check to see if the station streams online. So you would bring more listeners in overall (both online and over the air) if the FM/AM's coverage range is better in the first place, and you choose a team that plays opponents which are mostly in that coverage area.

If CT HS football does indeed get moved to spring of next year because of the pandemic, I wonder if Kool Radio would still consider broadcasting the Cheshire games then even though it's not a typical time slot? Right now the plan is still to play a limited number of games in the fall starting in early October, but if we still get another wave of the virus around then, moving to spring would very likely happen.

In my part of the country, school districts and schools 'sell' broadcast rights to the highest bidder or they have a fixed price. At one station, the school district jacked up the rate so high we didn't carry the games as we had for years and years. Our competitor did and lost money. The next year they wanted the same amount and nobody carried the games. After a year of no radio coverage, the school district came to their senses. I wonder if the change was due to the amount wanted for broadcast rights.

We're in a wait and see world right now......but if things are clear and there does end up being a "normal" high school football season in the fall of 2021, would Kool Radio start broadcasting the Cheshire games again?

If I see Coach Drust at ShopRite I'll ask him, but I don't remember the last time I saw him at ShopRite. Of course I don't go there was often as I used to.
