This DXer Was Talking DX On National TV!

Earlier this week I appeared on ABC TV Australia's national morning show "News Breakfast" via Skype from the KSKO studios in McGRath, Alaska because of my reception of 7ZR 936khz Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.. a 10kw 2 tower directional from 13,000km/8000 miles away! 7ZR apparently has a null towards Brisbane which puts that null towards me too!

Here’s a recording of the TV interview, thanks to Matt Smith at WGSR TV in Reidsville, NC for recording this off the stream for me

And here's my audio of 7ZR 936! The first case of hearing ABC Hobart 936khz came right at the top of the hour (1400UTC Wed Mar. 24th) with the ABC Radio time pipes and then the top of hour theme music that leads into news. I think the news anchor introduces himself as "David Rollins". Here's an audio recording of what I heard: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rmVXYj6tmkDfSqmXxg9NdcOGYOTMeDAG/view?usp=sharing Theres a few 936's in Australia, but 7ZR is the only ABC Local Radio formatted 936 in the entire country and right before the news theme intro, I'd heard english language talk back type content. 6 minutes later at 1405UTC, I hear a female start reading a weather forecast, talking about a flood warning, mentioning coastal waters and a river. At 22 seconds into this recording, she says "Low of 15, top of 21... ABC Radio Hobart". Here's an audio recording of what I heard: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18kq22kKzglmUUMVUgZ8BBW9KSBfJE8vE/view?usp=sharing

You're getting famous, Paul. Congrats. Of course, I'll probably never hear Hobart 936khz in my life. It seems like eastern WA is a 'DU-free' zone for AM DX. The closest has been very muffled audio from a tentative 846 in Kiribati. All of my other 'over-the-Pacific' logs have been Japan, South and North Korea, China and Taiwan.
This summer, I am on a mission however! To snag Paul's old employer. I need the E-skip clouds to align correctly somewhere in the Rockies so I can hear a clear ID from Hits 106 in Laramie. ;)

I'm still on KLMI 106.1 and if you email me, i still have access to the entire log 24/7/365 and can quickly check anything you think you may have heard.

Thanks. And the playlist is fantastic for a small town. KYOY 92.3 in Cheyenne is like them only skewing older. Lots of oh wow's.

Congrats, Paul!

That was awesome.

I noticed the news people kept referring to it as 'shortwave'.

They would have been even more blown away if they realized it was AM!

They knew it was AM.. but ... even the average Joe who knows nothing about radio.. when you mention reception around the world, they know.. shortwave. Notice.. i did say "shortwave AND AM Radio".. when answering one of her questions.

I was also not about to correct an anchor on live, national TV because I figured that were making it as easy and ungeeking the conversation enough that the average joe could understand what we were talking about!

What fun, Paul! The folks Down Under probably think of you as SomeRadioMate. :)

YUp it was! I've been on ABC's 2NC 1233 Newcastle, ABC's 7ZR 936 Hobart and now ABC TV.

The 7ZR 936 interview was live live live, so was ABC TV.. the 2NC interview was recorded

I got really close to Laramie last year from here, I'm sure you'll snag it at some point.
