WJUF - Inverness - 90.1HD2 Missing in Action for 2 weeks

I could not find a radio board for Ocala/Gainesville, so posting this here.

Does anyone have any info if WJUF has permanently ended their HD2-Classics 24? It has been off the air for 2 weeks; for the first few days, there was not even RDS and their Wi_Fi stream for also off for a day or so (it would look in, but no audio); the stream is working now and the RDS is back on and has been back on for about a week.

Nothing on their website mentions a problem, so I did call and leave a message; the stream is fine for both the HD1 and HD2 (especially with the on and off again interference from FMLP Power 90 in Brandon); but in a 2 hour power outage that I experienced 2 nights ago, the WiFi was out.

I’ve also wondered why they have the Classical 24 stream on both an HD2 and HD3; I could be wrong, but it seems to me, that having an unnecessary HD3 decreases the fidelity of the HD2 (and the volume is lower than other HD2’s)

Thanks in advance if anyone has any info.

The engineer from WJUF/WUFT called me and assured me that when a part comes in, they will return the HD2 and HD3; the engineer indicated that he does the 2 hour drive from Gainesville to the tower site (between Dunnellon and Inverness) at least twice a week and then via a stream listens to the online signal.

The engineer is Bill Mcclancey, if anyone wants to talk radio or discuss either WUFT or WJUF; email would be [email protected] .

He mentioned that their licensing agreement requires them to have an HD3 if they have an HD2 and at WUFT; 90.1HD3 it is a localized student radio.

He is also aware of interference issues and even a signal weaker than they would like in eastern Hernando, and s.e. Sumter county (Bushnell and Webster) and he would like to have a translator in that area, but that is a lot easier said than done with licensing and obtaining real estate).

I can answer this because I currently work at this building. Yes, its true. He does drive twice a week to there and I sorta know him so he makes continual trips to make sure WJUF's transmitter works properly. If there's a 90.1 HD3, that's probably GHQfm on 95.3 FM in Gainesville which is broadcast on 89.1 WUFT-FM-HD3. I didn't know its also on WJUF-FM-HD3, if that's the case.

If that IS the case, I'll have to let someone know inside to update the station identifications since WJUF-FM-HD3 is NOT mentioned in GHQ's identifications.

Thank you itsRoly4266 for the additional information -

The HD2 and HD3 for WJUF are both classical24; if an HD3 has to be carried, the GHQ format, from what he described would not be a good fit for a signal so far from the campus. (GHQ was described as format with campus and student and local Gainesville news).

His trip yesterday was on his day off to check some of the equipment, so he sure sounds dedicated; as a result of my phone message, he was called on his cell phone and then called me.

Then WJUF is more likely C24 on both HD2 and HD3 as GHQ is not broadcast on WJUF-HD3, as told by Director of Radio Programming Rob Harder.

Bill has an amazing extensive knowledge of technical/engineering information and I've talked to him a few times in the building whenever I see him. He's great.

I've been told HD2 is broken and so new parts would have to come in and be installed. Hopefully, within the next few weeks, it should come back to normal.

There is also a volume issue with 90.1 HD2 and HD3 as well that Bill is aware of and that problem will be addressed when the new part arrives and installed and tested; but currently the volume on the HD1 is fine, but tune to the HD2 from any other station or even there HD1 and you have to turn the volume up several notches.

Its probably the standard with every station that offers an HD1 and HD2 where volume is amazing on HD1 but lowered on HD2, HD3, HD4, etc.

Btw, DISCLAIMER I work for GHQfm at 95.3 FM in Gainesville which is also on 89.1 WUFT-HD3 so I see lots of folks inside my building including the legendary Steve Russell.

Fast forward to April 2021 and WJUF's HD2 is spotty again; sometimes off, sometime on; also it seems that their power is fluctuating as well. Of course, the alternative is to use the app; except the app is not working as well; at least not on the IOS/Apple platforms. 🙁. I'm hesitant to send an email to Bill M; as I'm not sure he's still the engineer; I know last time, he really had his hands full, working at that very remote transmitter site in or near Inverness,Fl as well as his work in Gainesville as well.

I think he still is but I'm quite not sure. I'm no longer there so I don't exactly know for sure as to how that can be fixed though I know he was quite busy from the last time I was there.

New and improved. Maybe, yes. Lol.

WUFT is a great station nonetheless.

I concur; WUFT/WJUF, both the talk side and Classical music side of WUFT/WJUF are great as well, so imagine my frustration one night last week, when the website's streaming was not working and on the FM and HD side both were full of interference due to atmospheric conditions! I was receiving 89.1 WSMR as though I was in Saarasota and so I thought WSZRZ- 107.9 would be coming in great, but then when I heard the country music, I knew it wasn't WSRZ; but instead it was WEAT; WPB coming in full HD as though I was in West Palm Beach! So the frustration turned to fascination and that lasted for about 90 minutes.
