Rock 92.9 Launches In Raleigh

Curtis Media Group has flipped Star 92.9 Hot AC to Rock 92.9 FM to go after WRDU.

I know I'm a few months late...The Triangle apparently cannot support Classic Country? This was the 2nd attempt in a decade on AM 570, but of course we can't (insert sarcasm) see how it does with a translator...and we'll now likely never know.

My guess is the sales leadership at CMG thinks the new format will be easier to sell. Accurate or not, there is a perception among some salespeople that only 80 year old males listen to classic country. I'm considerably younger than that and love CC but no one is asking for my preferences.

There are two very different approaches to classic country. One (predominantly on AM) is 60s, 70s, 80s. The other (predominantly on FM) is 80s and 90s (with a small smattering of 70s and early 2000s). The latter is very sellable and getting pretty good ratings. The former is appealing to 65+ men, and not doing very well.

I worked at Sunny 93.9 for several years after it first signed on. We were told that our job has to keep WRAL down just enough to allow G105 to remain #1. Things in the market have shifted significantly since those days. It could be that AM 570s raison d'être is its translator might keep WRDU down just enough to allow WBBB to be on top.
