Kennedy Center Honors June 6

This is a little different. The postponed Kennedy Center Honors will take place on Sunday June 6, broadcast on CBS-TV. Normally they air during the week between Christmas and New Years. This time, it's after the May sweeps and all the big network finales.

This year the KENNEDY CENTER HONORS in Recognition of Lifetime Artistic Achievement, DEBBIE ALLEN, JOAN BAEZ, GARTH BROOKS, MIDORI, and DICK VAN DYKE.

For the past three years, the president did not attend. However, we expect to see the new president & his wife in attendance.

And the first Sunday in June is where they normally have the Tony Awards.

Good point, and they've been delayed "until Broadway reopens."

Jan. 30 (UPI) -- The 2021 Tony Awards ceremony honoring excellence on Broadway will take place when New York theater returns from a prolonged closure due to the coronavirus pandemic. "Voting for the 74th Annual Tony Awards will take place between March 1 -- March 15, 2021.

Wasn't this due to the sheer number of boycotts and no-shows that were expected, had the former president shown his face?

Here's an article that covers some of the issues during his three years:

The Kennedy Center says he was invited for all three years, and sent regrets each time.

He's not much of a music guy. Most presidents hold a number of musical events during their term. Not him.

Well maybe there's that, but also the boycotts and no-shows that I mentioned previously, which were also alluded to in the article you posted:

"..the Trumps chose to first not attend in 2017 after several recipients had threatened to boycott and not attend their own ceremony if Trump attended the event. Trump said they were not attending in order to “allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction,”

I doubt Trump himself said that. More likely a "spokesman." They have one rule for the Kennedy Center Honors: You must be present to win. Honorees threatening to boycott would be a problem. If an honoree does not attend, they are not honored. One example of this was Irving Berlin. They wanted to honor him when he was alive, but he was physically unable to attend. They had to tell him, very apologetically, that he could not be honored if he did not attend.

The Kennedy Center Honors is taking place this weekend in DC. The event will be televised on June 6:

According to the above article, the show was taped over several days in front of a small audience at the Kennedy Center's Opera House. Normally, the Opera House is filled and the show is taped in one night. The honorees met with the president earlier in the week. No word if he also attended any of the tapings.
