Memo to 92.3: daily, expected #'s are not "breaking news"

It is a severe underperformer but widely reported to have the highest gross of any radio station in the nation.
What a strange juxtaposition of statements. Kind of like saying:

"LeBron James is a severe underperformer, but he is also the greatest NBA player of all time"

WTOP in Washington reaches old folks that no advertiser wants or needs. It fails to reach the all important Hispanic market. It is a severe underperformer but widely reported to have the highest gross of any radio station in the nation.

KNX has been all news as long as anyone can remember but they don't seem to realize that they could do better by playing rap in Spanish.
We all know the kind of market your station goes for...

What does this have to do with radio in Phoenix?
I suppose it is intended to set the scenario for your opinions and posts. It is about a radio station in AZ, of course... yours.

Are those bits actually recorded from your station? If so, perhaps a good conversation would be why you ran them.

Since you brought up an objection to the information, perhaps you can clarify the background.

Is there a reason why 92.3 still announces the daily numbers as "breaking news"? It's not "breaking news." The daily numbers are announced, and anticipated to be announced, at approximately the same time every day: in between 8:00am-9:00am.

Can you guys please stop calling it "breaking news"? It won't be breaking news when you announce it tomorrow, nor the day after that, nor the week after that.

Huge pet peeve.
I second that. I'm assuming that KTAR management never read the fable "The Boy Who Cried Wolf"?

Gorilla glue is in short supply as KTAR tries to put back together all the news they've broken. 🤯

Is it any wonder why Nurse Jeff and I prefer to stream KFI most of the time? Much stronger presentation without all the dramatic sounders and hype. The major annoyance is the repetitive ads I Heart inserts to cover local KFI ads.

Down the hall in the engineering shop at KT'R: "When news breaks, we fix it."

From a journalism standpoint, the daily numbers at the moment they are released is by definition, "breaking." It may be a story you are tired of hearing about, but it's new information.

On the other hand, if you have opened the A Block with the breaking sounder every day for a year and a half, maybe you should give it a rest.

I tuned in briefly on my way to work today (mostly to catch the traffic) and heard a breaking sounder, followed by their top story, followed by another breaking sounder to lead off that story. I'll admit I caught it a bit late, so I didn't hear the "Breaking News and Traffic ...NOW" sounder. Do they still run that? Because if they did, that would be three sounders in a row.

The sounders themselves are IMO a bit overly dramatic.

KTAR does go heavy on the breaking news Sounders, even if it is not truly breaking news. It reminds me of CNN, which does the same thing and then you find out the breaking news story is something that is not that important at all.

I also think Arizona Sports 98.7 also overly uses their “Arizona Sports - Breaking News” sounder. They’ll use the breaking news Sounder for when a player is out for one of the local teams or a random player is traded. The way the Sounder interrupts the regular scheduled programming, you would think the breaking news is some cataclysmic event!
