Matty In The Morning

Aaaaaaaand here's where the thread finally goes political -- and then the mods will end up locking it.
This is about radio first and foremost. There are sociopolitical things behind the issue, but this is a very successful radio morning show host and the management of a very important station dealing with something that involves a current and very topical event.

This is an excellent subject, and we want to have it followed and commented on. But lets not make it into a left vs. right fight; let's make this about the corporate fear of being politically incorrect and a talent who does not want to be fettered.

Love it or hate it, this is the most exciting thing to happen on Boston radio in a very long while!

Do we have to dig all the way back to the Tom Lykus incident to find something of this big of a caliber?

Come to think of it, I think the Dennis & Callahan Metco incident comes close!

Yup, listening! So far, they are still announcing that you are listening to "Matty In The Morning!", but as far as "The man, the myth, the legend" has yet to be heard. However, they just have announced that his show is straight ahead! We'll wait in much anticipation.

Could it be that IHeartMedia is milking this for all that it worth?

OK, pre-recorded ad mention. His voice, but just not live, yet.

WOW, Corporate begged him "Please don't quit!"

iHeartmedia has moved in Matt's favor, saying that he has the full freedom to say whatever you want.

Matty is upset that the national media saying that it was a radio stunt!

Does not want to walk away from his career.

Finally, Matty just said that as a guy, you know that you have made it into "Bar Stool Sports!"

So, in closing, Matty is back!

Of course he's back. He has a contract. He can't just walk away, he'll get sued for breach.

He's trying to turn an entertaining comedy show on a music station into a political talk show.
Maybe not, however I am certain that there must be some type of clause that says they can still fire him, or at least prevent him from being on the air.

There comes a point where having Archie Bunker in the morning won’t be advantageous to the bottom line.

Not on a music station, anyway. There comes a time when all of these guys get tired of playing music, especially music that's aiming at people half their age. They're no longer in that life group. It happens to everyone. Stern, Imus, and Rush all got to a point where they wanted to talk politics for their show. That's fine. iHeart owns a local talk station. Move Matty to WRKO and he can talk politics all day. Until then, he needs to stick with the format that he's supposed to be working in.

At some point, advertisers are going to ask not to have their spots in a controversial show. That's the next step here.

Sure they can fire him. But that's not what happened. He said he quit.

You can also always quit contract or not. As long as you don't plan to work for anyone else. But if you want to hang it up that is always an option. You may have to return some money or equipment but they don't own you.

Yes, however he he bad mouthed management on the air too. Which the last time that I checked, unless your name is Howard Stern, that is a very big no, no!

The Managers will swallow their pride if it means retaining their cash cow and bonuses.

Matty is 71, he does some of his year from his house in Florida, he is Boston's Dick Clark, an old man trying to stay relevant to a P1 that could be his Grandchildren.

At some point this is going to end

Oh sure. He could be segued to talk. Might be a good solution all around.

He was never going anywhere. Not with the 7-figure salary he commands, and the fact that he makes a boatload of money in endorsements, etc. for iHeart and WXKS. As long as the money train keeps rolling with Matty, iHeart will take anything he says with a grain of salt and cash the checks.

I have a newfound respect for iHeart-Boston President Alan Chartrand for backing Matty, whatever the former's reasons were.

He's trying to turn an entertaining comedy show on a music station into a political talk show.
And I'm not certain a CHR is the place to do that.

The sweepers write themselves:
"Grandpa's politics in the morning ... and today's hottest music all day -- this is Boston's KISS 108"

Matty would not be a good fit on WRKO. While he has always injected politics into his show from time to time, I would not describe him as a conservative. And, as such, he would not fit with WRKO's conservative talk format.
