Matty In The Morning

Yup, it isn't like when the late Vinny Peruzzi quit on the air at Kiss 108 30 years ago, siting that things just were not the same after the late Sunny Joe White was fired. I could see how more than a few people would have butted heads with the late Steve Rivers also. Them 2 PD's just had different approaches to programming.

(WOW, all 3 have sinced passed on! Sad!)

And, oh yes, Matt Siegal went on the record at the time saying that he would work for Steve Rivers over Sunny Joe White anyday! Which is quite admittedly a profound statement to make!

As great as Matty is as a DJ, is there anywhere besides Boston where he could command a salary above very low 6 figures ?

He could take over the station like Charles once did @BCN, but he is a geezer and would have to settle for an 8 hour take over before he tired out.

i don't live in Boston or listen to Boston radio, but to hear a jock walk away from his show cause he was angry at his bosses that he was about to do something that won't work in today's woke PC climate, that means the guy rightfully needs to be fired. and seeing all the stories from the radio news sites about this morning's walk off of the guy being in his 70s, why is a guy in his 70s hosting a morning show on a station that's music targets people in younger demos than him. i think what will happen is he retires and IHM replaces him with someone younger than him via syndication or voice track in a different market

The last that I knew, Matty is still a Top Morning Show ratings winner, and has been so for 40 years now! True, while the the old adage goes that nobody is unresplaceable, and we are talking iHeartRadio radio in the equation too. I am sure that the bean counters as crunching all day long, as to whether they can pull in a better profit without Matty In The Morning or not? The story continues...

Everybody thought Loren & Wally were key to ROR's success. They both left, and the station is still highly rated.

I was told a long time ago that no one is irreplaceable.
The irony with Loren & Wally is that once they were no longer there, the ratings actually went up!

I would love to be privy to Kiss's morning drive demographic numbers.

IIRC, Rick Dees had pretty good numbers at KIIS when Clear Channel pushed him out in 2003.

As a DJ ages, there comes a moment when they become "old." It's not a date on a calendar. It's an attitude. A some point circa 2002, Dees went on air to complain how bad 50 Cent was. And he came across sounding like a grandpa. Perhaps this is Matty's "grandpa" moment.

Matty is correct to complain there is a double-standard (okay to criticize far right, but not the left). But he's not on PBS. He's hosting a station with a young audience. Griping/joking about gender fluidity is a discussion better suited to talk radio for an audience of aging Gen Xers who also "don't get it" (as do I; I don't understand it yet). The KISS demo probably do not see gender non-binary as an issue.

Which advertisers do you lose if you heckle hillbillies storming the U.S. capitol? MyPillow?
Which advertisers do you lose if you heckle the LGBTQ crowd? Pretty much every single corporation in America.

Not saying this is right or wrong. But it's reality. If Matty can no longer see it, it reflects poorly on his age. Time to host a Classic Hits morning show, not a CHR one.

The comments he made were wrong and insensitive. It's time for him to retire. I was a fan of his morning show but not anymore.

Aaaaaaaand here's where the thread finally goes political -- and then the mods will end up locking it.

We can fight over which ideology invented "cancel" culture (cough, Parents TV Council). We can fight over fairness (cough, it's just an FM drive time show).

But let's be honest, it won't matter what bizzle13, nowradioguy, or I think. I'm a freaking mid-30s guy who lives 1000+ miles outside the Boston market. Whose opinion actually matters? 100% the opinion of the advertisers (and the P1 WXKS female listeners 15-29 they target).

All we can do is sit back and watch.
