New station coming soon

This is AM 1300 in Lumberton. Per Google maps, the tower site is 76 miles from downtown Houston, a far stretch for a 2,000 watt daytime signal and 270 watts at night. This is only the start, not the end game, so it will be interesting to see what evolves.

I've been out to that tower site... and gotten stuck in that muddy field a few times

KHTW Facebook shows them as being a Tejano station coming soon .

This is just the silent KLLS with new calls and a new owner about to do a reboot of a limited signal Beaumont market station. It will have no coverage and no impact in Houston.

A preliminary look at co-channel and adjacent channel allocations indicates that this is not a portable or improvable facility. Plus, it is only 270 watts at night and it's on a pretty bad high-band frequency.

Other than the technical issues, I don't see why there is any interest in starting up Tejano stations as the format has been shown to be on the edge of death, with little appeal among the audience groups advertisers want to reach.

The KHTW delusion is confirmed by having "H-TOWN" in its logo, and not having any possibility of this station (as currently licensed) reaching anything close to Houston. The 2KW tower is in Lumberton, north of Beaumont, and the signal is directional to the south directly into Beaumont and the Gulf of Mexico. Hint: KHTW is a Golden Triangle station and nothing more. Unless Lopez Broadcasting has some grand scheme to seriously upgrade or relocate, they will have a tough time selling ads in a region that is purposely ignored in its station logo.
Here's the overly optimistic signal pattern map: https://publicfiles.fcc.gov/am-profile/khtw/contour-maps
> Perhaps the owner of the previous KLLS, our buddy Continuous Wave, has some insight . . .

It seems liek this company, Lopez Broadcasting has a history of ending up with mediocre marginal signals...

Yes it’s past the 30 days they said they would bring Tejano back. Oh well.

Perhaps we can get them a package discount and they can bring both Tejano and Elvis back.

One would fill the showrooms in Las Vegas, and the other might fill a bad bar in Brownsville.

They are supposedly going to boost the power from the current limits on the license. We’ll see how far that gets.

That’s the only way someone in Houston could conceivably hear it.

Even with any power increase, 1300 can't make it to Houston...KXYZ assures that..I was under the impression it was going to be Hispanic religious...but Tejano?? Yeah that will die a quick death..who knows, I may get the station back after all LOL

Any power increase would still be directed south into the Gulf. You would have to boost to 50kw and have a directional array aimed towards Houston, and that would still be inadequate, and not going to happen.

You also have to consider KVET in Austin.

This is a true SMH situation.

KVET tears up Lumberton south of Beaumont at night..5kw might be doable but that's it..KXYZ in Pasadena is the main one that will keep KHTW pattern the same..not my problem ;)

They say they’re working on ‘an upgrade’ to cover Houston. I don’t see how that’s possible.

Wonder where Lopez is getting such misguided advice to think a 2KW Beaumont station on AM 1300 could possibly serve H-town. Even an upgrade, change of frequency, or change of location seems beyond feasibility. The old saying "bloom where you're planted" applies to Lumberton-Beaumont for KHTW. If Houston is the goal, lease time on KYND.

Not a bad idea. Note that KNTH is up for sale...if Lopez can cough up $2.6 million (or negotiate a lower price) they could have a signal that is pretty solid in heavily Hispanic areas of Houston metro, and is fulltime.

I suspect any "Tejano 1070" would be short-lived. The recent Puro Tejano format on KGBC 1540 and its 101.7 translator only lasted a few months, albeit on crummy signals.

I doubt KVET is causing nighttime headaches for 1300 in Lumberton, as the KVET night signal has a big null to the east. More likely suspect is KAKC in Tulsa, which throws a big nighttime lobe right at B/PA and, like KVET, runs a SportsTalk format.

I've heard Lopez is or was working with a pretty shady engineer a few years ago... Not sure about now......

In any case, KHTW is now simulcasting with 98.9 KLMO in Dilley/San Antonio (Tejano). Just caught KLMO's top of hour ID. You can listen here. Home

KHTW has been off the air for months, so there’s that. Nothing filed by Lopez either.

He’s delusional about the station serving Houston - not even on a good day.

Is it back on? Just heard KLMO's morning DJ give a live ID for "KHTW 1300 Lumberton Houston" on their Internet stream.
