April Chicago Radio Ratings

Rockford is a small market and can be prone to sampling issues. That latest book could be an aberration.
They have been stable in a narrow range for nearly a decade. They got hit hard in the last book, while all other stations were within their normal range. That sounds like a station issue.
I also have no idea how the station sounded last fall; I only began listening in recent weeks. Mid-West Family generally does a pretty good job with its Active Rock brands. Is the station a perfect fit for that market? I have no idea. All I know is I came away with a positive first impression when I first listened online.
Well, the local listeners seem to have departed. We will not have an answer until late July.

I seem to remember 95.5 alternating between Spanish AC, Spanish CHR, and Regional Mexican, not necessarily in that order.
There was no difference between Spanish AC and CHR in that era. That was prior to reggaetón becoming "universal" and the format was basically called "Pop" in that segment of the industry.

And I recall it being variants of Regional all the time, ranging from all currents to more gold based.

Didn't they rebrand and relaunch the station at one point? It didn't help the numbers, as I recall. I'll have to pull up the Wikipedia page one of these days.

You are right... around 2009 they were "Mega" for about two of the recession's worst years and did a horrible copy of LA's KLVE. They did the flip right as Chicago adopted the PPM, and the results were not nice. Overall, they were in Spanish for about four years, I think. They never got any kind of traction.

I had forgotten totally about that, mostly because it was so poorly done that we did not really pay much attention to it... in either format. The greater concern was SBS' station, which occasionally seems to gain traction and then collapses yet again. It has been doing that for about two decades...

So, I did an anecdotal test of Rock 95.5 with family and friend guests over the last two weekends, and the results seemed to be mostly positive, with each guest hearing at least a few songs they rocked out to, doing air guitars, air drums, and just singing along happily. Had it turned up loud but not too loud, just enough to create a party atmosphere while avoiding pissing off any of my neighbors. Honestly, I enjoyed it quite a bit myself and now just think of the station as a modernized classic rock station, realizing there are plenty of active rock stations out there to stream when I want a playlist with new rock. I'll just keep listening now unless the owners change the format.🤘

95.5 earned decent numbers initially. The apparent problem with the station's approach is inability to sustain listener interest over time.

Journey and Bryan Adams do not belong in medium to heavy rotation on a station that also plays Disturbed and Limp Bizkit in medium to heavy rotation.

Those interested in the former will listen to 94.7 or 97.1. Those interested in the latter likely have limited if any tolerance for the former.

KXXR in Minneapolis does exceptionally well for its format, and it's been around for years. It plays the right mix of Active Rock, Alternative, and a few Classic Rock tracks. It also plays a lot of local bands during overnights. KXXR seems to respond well to the Minneapolis St. Paul market. By some miracle, Cumulus hasn't destroyed this station yet.

It's also noteworthy that the MSP market does not have as many full-powered stations as other markets. The full-power stations here are 100k watts and cover a huge geographic area. Keep that in mind when looking at MSP ratings.

WJJO in Madison gets an honorable mention for the Active Rock format, in my opinion.

To David Eduardo - seems 104.9 The X's fortunes in Rockford improved greatly with the Spring book (just released).
