KZAI 103.7 lights up in San Antonio

According to the email I received from Air1, it is now broadcasting on 103.7 in San Antonio as of 12:15 PM Saturday. KZAI license info

I cannot check, and I can't check if KAHL's translator made it's move to 107.9. The Global Tuner in San Antonio has been down since Friday. So I'm done with San Antonio radio updates for now unless it comes back online. KAHL's translator did file a license to cover on Friday though so I assume they made their move also. As for Air1, it's still going to be on 97.7 as well from what they told me.

This should also indicate that the 98.3 in Corpus Christi (up until recently KZLR and before that, KMJR) should have moved to 103.7 to become the "new" KXAI, opening up 98.3 for a planned move of KMZZ from 106.9. The "new" KZAI in SA is the same license as the "old" KXAI in CC.

Perhaps someone in the CC area can confirm?

I’m nowhere near either right now, but KXAI and KZAI filed licenses to cover for their new facilities this morning.

Why didn't the Corpus station stay on 98.3? It was already set up that way, if I were Air 1 I would have asked to be able to move 103.7 from Corpus to San Antonio without touching 98.3.

Because it keeps Air1 on the same 103.7 frequency in CC, albeit with sone what reduced power.

As Mediafrog points out, most Corpus Christi listeners didn't notice any change when 103.7 moved to San Antonio. That's worth something. The signal isn't an exact copy of the old one as the original 103.7 wouldn't have been allowed to move to San Antonio without an auction if it could've been dropped in without eliminating the old signal, but it's only a move 15-20 miles away. People not along the far northern or western fringes of the market shouldn't notice a thing.

Also, keep in mind that KMZZ 106.9 is moving to 98.3 as part of these changes. I won't pretend to have knowledge of the what or the why behind that, but getting KMZZ off of 106.9 either so it could upgrade in the future or another station could upgrade might also have been a factor in 98.3 moving to 103.7. Both KMZZ and KYRK were stuck about where they were if KMZZ were to have remained at 106.9. One would at least think KMZZ would have the opportunity to upgrade now, though KYRK could still be locked in due to KUKA and KRXB.

Last I heard, KUKA was off. So they should either file an STA or turn in the license so other stations can have the channel.

As for KMZZ, it filed to move to 98.3 after 98.3/103.7's move was planned. My guess is KMZZ's eventual plan is to try to upgrade power now it's on 98.3, maybe it can become what KMJR was.

I couldn’t tell you. It shows as being on-air and has an active website, but neither of those things necessarily means much.

As I mentioned, I don't have any inside information of any kind. I've also had no experience dealing with EMF's engineering department. We'll probably never know unless somebody involves gets on here and speaks up. That KMZZ filed for 98.3 roughly six months after the new KXAI filed for 103.7 would lend credence to it not having anything to do with 98.3’s move to 103.7, but it doesn't exclude it as a possibility. My experience has been these things rarely happen in a vacuum, but engineers tend to be a different breed. I've known some who do calculations like that for fun. Also, KXAI appears to be on the same tower as multiple other area stations, including several iHeart stations. Getting onto a common tower might have had something to do with the decision to move KXAI, too. It looks like it might have been on its own tower before. I can't imagine the land with the tower near Sinton would fetch a ton of money, but maybe saving costs of being on a standalone tower would be worth something.

The following is on KAHL's website.

"We are happy to announce that we have officially moved from 103.7FM to 107.9FM!"

Has anyone in the area heard the new signals 103.7 and 107.9?

I was in the fringe area of kzai spots this morning was able to confirm it is air one.

Of course be careful when listening to 103.7 in South Texas, as the frequency is home to Air1 outlets in San Antonio (KZAI), Corpus Christi (KXAI) and Houston (KHJK.) Might wait for a TOHID to be sure of which one you are hearing.

Yes. A lot of times in our place in Lavaca county I either get Corpus or Houston's air one. I didn't stay long enough to get a TOHID, I was getting KBPA's HD signal most of the time interference.

I have listened to both this morning and they both come in clear off my redmi 8 Cellphone FM tuner over by 410/Culebra area.

Same channel, but the new tower location is also much closer to the population in the Corpus Christi market, which should more than offset the power decrease.

Also, and i haven't run the spacing so this is just a guess, it might be helpful to own the co-channel in Corpus if a future upgrade for 103.7 in San Antonio ever opens up.

KZAI is now fully licensed for 103.7, their license to cover got approved.

K279AB however still has the call letters it used when it was on 103.7, as their license to cover is still pending. I'd expect the lower power translator station to get approved first. Could the delay in approval be due to the fact that an invalid address for the engineer is on the license? https://fccinfo.com/CMDProEngine.ph...sAppIDNumber=25076ff379c982f20179cfbc79c20191

I'm not going to put the address for the engineer here, but if you visit the link you'll find the engineer's name and residence address. Google the address and you'll discover it's the wrong zip code.
If I was an engineer, I wouldn't use my house on the FCC addresses of stations I worked with... That's a big privacy concern!

Should we mention that it was thanks to KBPA Bob-FM moving from previous city of license San Marcos, to new city of license Austin that allowed 103.7 to become available in San Antonio. If KBPA was still 20 miles south of Austin on 103.5, the 103.7 frequency in San Antonio could not have opened.

107.9 is now a licensed station. I expect they'll get new call letters soon.

That's all true, but remember that part of their move-in proposal was that they were losing the old tower site anyway due to development in Hays County, so a move somewhere was required.

Regardless, the "downgraded" C1 signal they have now from West Austin is a substantially better overall signal than the previous "San Marcos" one.

It is a win-win for sure.

The KAHL translator at 107.9 in San Antonio has new call letters, "K300DY".
