FCC approves KPNX move from RF 12 to RF 18

There are currently 3 VHF and 21 UHF stations in Phoenix operating a total of 104 subchannels, plus three UHF stations under construction.

UHF Channels
14 - K38IZ 38 (7 subchannels)22 - KPDF 41 (6 subchannels)30 - K30MM (under construction)
15 - KPNX 15 (5 subchannels)23 - KTVP 23 (5 subchannels)31 - KPPX 51 (5 subchannels)
16 - KPHE 44 (6 subchannels)24 - KTVK 3 (5 subchannels)32 - KEJR 40 (1 subchannel)
17 - KPHO 5 (5 subchannels)25 - KFPB 50 (8 subchannels)33 - KTVW 33 (5 subchannnels)
18 - K18JL 22 (7 subchannels)26 - KUTP 45 (6 subchannels)34 - KVPA 42 (3 subchannels)
19 - KGRY (1 subchannel)27 - KASW NextGen35 - KFPH NextGen
20 - KPAZ 21 (5 subchannels)28 - K28MO (under construction)36 - KAZT 7 (4 subchannels)
21 - KGRQ 29 (1 subchannel)29 - KTAZ 39 (4 subchannels)

As you can see, all UHF channels in Phoenix are in use or under construction. KPNX moving to channel 18 will displace K18JL, which will probably need to find a VHF channel.

The third station under construction is KGRX 19. All three stations under construction are planned to operate from atop South Mountain. KGRY will move to channel 21 and will broadcast its signal to the north and west of South Mountain, while KGRQ, which will be co-channel but air the same content, will broadcast its signal to the south and east of South Mountain. K30MM is being held by Globe LPTV, which runs KFPB. I don't know if Globe LPTV is actively building a station, so that frequency may be for sale, but it will assuredly get clobbered by KUAT from Tucson, which is co-channel, and is the strongest station out of the Old Pueblo.

RF 18 was allocated to Flagstaff as an HDTV companion channel during and after the repack. That leaves Flag with 9, 13 (KFPH), 22 (KNAZ), 27 (in use by a translator), and 32, and opens up RF 12 in Phoenix (or Flagstaff) I would assume.

Hi, I am in the E valley of Phoenix. Channel 12 / KPNX has been a challenge to view OTA.

Is there a published schedule, stating when they expect the move to 18 to be completed?

Thanks!

Cannot help but wonder if KNAZ/K06AE-D might be affected?
Like many stations on Mingus, if K06AE-D uses KPNX's Rf channel
as its source, the signal reliability should improve during the
summer thunderstorm season.

I would have guessed they receive KNAZ off-air or through intercity microwave but maybe not. In any case, they should move from VHF-Lo to RF 12 -- help folks who would no longer need a big antenna not to mention increased reliability.

As expected, the FCC has approved KPNX's request to move from RF channel 12 to RF channel 18.

Look for HC2's K18JL-D 22.x to request displacement in the near future. Unfortunately for them, all UHF channels are in use, so VHF is their only option.
And RF 12 is the choice here - Is Rf 12 gone from Phoenix forever or can it be added back in later through rulemaking?

KPNX/KNAZ have really stepped up their game. KPNX might have taken years
to move from Rf 12 to Rf 18 or perhaps not at all. The differences at KNAZ are
even more dramatic. I used to hate watching NBC because they were so
inconsistent, with frequent outages. When they were up and running, the video
quality was poor and had cycling pixels, unrelated to reception. They have become
the cleanest, most consistent, station serving Northern Arizona and the addition
of three new subchannels is most welcome!

All of the FCC documentation has been approved, so July 8 looks to be a go. K18JL-D (22.x) has already gone silent and there have been reports that KPNX has already been testing on RF channel 18.

Surprisingly, As of Independence Day, K-18DD-D atop Mingus Mtn is still in operation.
With summer monsoon storms the last couple of late afternoon and evenings, KNAZ and
its translator, K06AE-D atop Mingus Mtn, have been impossible to view. It would seem that
the translator, K06AE-D, receives KPNX over the air. It then acts as the source for KNAZ's
main transmitter near Mormon Lake. Both Rf 6 and Rf 22 are impossible to view under
such circumstances. Perhaps the move to Rf 18 on South Mtn will improve things a bit.....

None of KPNX's materials so far have really addressed translator viewers who should be told, basically, "you won't need to rescan, but you might not be able to see KPNX for a bit on the 8th because we have to adjust the reception equipment".

At around 12:30 PM today (during their low-rated infotainment show, nonetheless), they made the move to UHF.

It's 1:15 pm local and I just tuned into 12. If I press the channel 12 buttons on my smart TV I get sent to "12-12" which seems to be the same as "12-1". All the subs seem to be there and reception in the SE Valley is OK with an indoor UHF antenna. If I use the channel up button I land on "12-1". Don't know what "12-12" is. Dupe perhaps?
