iHM is getting ready to do what Entercom or Cumulus should've done YEARS ago...

I saw a couple of TV ads for the Bull and Power 96 last night. I doubt iHeart would do TV ads for a station that it plans to flip.. Both commercials mentioned the AM drive personalities. Were these "swap out's? Are there "swap out" commercials in Atlanta or is that just a small market thing? I have given lots of stuff away from the promotion and sales departments in the past.

Personally the coolest (swap out) was a cruise on the Bell of Louisville which we gave to sponsors and listeners almost 30 years ago for it's "tune up" for Derby Week race with the Delta Queen.

If iHeartMedia Atlanta ever reconsiders flipping any of their stations to The Breeze on a main HD1 channel, Power 96.1 WWPW-FM & 94.9 THE BULL WUBL-FM will never have it happen to them anytime soon. The reason is because in observance of National Doughnut Day (Official Summer Edition), Power & THE BULL will be at 2 Dunkin' locations with CBS46 WGCL-TV anchor Karyn Greer & meteorologist Ella Dorsey. Karyn will be at one Dunkin' location during Wake Up Atlanta on CBS46 and Ella will be at another Dunkin' location also during Wake Up Atlanta. Happy National Doughnut Day (Official Summer Edition) to all on this Friday, June 4th, 2021!
You obviously have no consideration or idea of how iHeart Media, Cumulus, Cox Entercom, Town Square Media and others do things majority of the times when they do a flip. Most of the time there is no warning. They say it happens employees revive their pink slips. Media companies could invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in an ad campaign for stations and paid in advance many weeks or months in advance and if the executives and board doesn’t like the amount money it’s pulling in with those station formats or the ratings just aren’t good enough for them, then tomorrow they can and will majority of the time pull the plug. This is how most in radio terms station and format blow ups happen. It may sound harsh, but this is the reality of the way radio, tv and media life just happens sometimes.

This sounds like the whole thing from, what, 10 years ago when a poster (I think his handle was goodtimesgreatoldies) kept saying and hinting that SOMEONE was bringing back 60s oldies Fox 97. And the one time it did happen (Clear Channel's Kool 105.7), he completely missed it.

speaking of blasts from the past, what happened to Caller 10?

You can check for yourselves and you shall see that www.96rockatl.com and www.atlantasrock.com are being prepped as we speak for an Independence Day weekend launch.

The previously anticipated launch weekend fell through due to technical difficulties and such.
The word is a 96 Rock digital station is coming. Rumor is Larry Wachs is involved, but I don't have that confirmed. Don't know anything about The Breeze.

Update for ya! It’s about to be “Christmas in July” for the Atlanta, GA market with the launch of the the new 96 Rock (www.96rockatl.com / www.Atlantasrock.com) streaming station as well as The Breeze blowing into Atlanta, Ga. Be prepared!
When I clicked on the links I get the message "no primary host". The name is legit, but one would think there would be an "under construction" type message. iHeart most could just have a "streaming" station(s) on the web site. There might be enough "traffic" on the website to have an "all digital" service like Roddy says.

Couple questions:

1) Are there any royalty breaks an online station can get by putting their signal on an HD-2 subchannel in a market versus being online-only? I've noticed that several iHeartRadio online stations are broadcast locally somewhere, such as the Classic AT40 channel which is broadcast on an HD subchannel in Dayton, OH.

2) Are there any other legacy stations in or near the ATL market with enough brand equity that someone could bring back as an online-only station? Of course, Cumulus still has 99X, Pretty Cool Media has Peach, and someone else has Fox.

As it was explained to me, there is no break in the SoundExchange royalties for being on an HD subchannel vs being online only. You can, however, get some breaks for being an over-the-air signal (including HD subchannels) on your BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC royalties to composers.

Actually HD radio is covered under the same law as broadcast. Because it uses analog transmission. Online is digital. So playing music on HD-2 only requires royalties to writers, not SoundExchange.

But yes, radio stations that stream their signal get a small break on songwriter royalty, because the view is it's paying twice for the some song. In the case of SoundExchange, broadcast doesn't pay for on air, just online. One of the sticking points in the deal with the recording industry is they refuse to make that discount that the writers made.

While I was told 96 Rock will be back as a digital station, I don't think that necessarily means it will not also be carried on an HD subchannel.

HD is, in fact, digital. It's a transmitted stream that has to be decoded. But because it is annexed to the main analog signal, whether AM or FM, the rights payments are based on the analog model.

One of the arguments for not changing the radio royalty "concept" was the rather limited bandwidth and tight compression algorithms of HD. At least that was a good excuse from radio's perspective. And since the record companies and artists were mostly concerned about downloads and "pure digital" at the time, radio got a pass.

I thought 96 Rock was an incredibly stale and boring station for the final six or seven years of its existence. I'm not sure why anyone would want to develop a tribute site or streaming channel.

How about NewsMonster online?

Absolutely. I was referring specifically to streaming an HD2, not the actual over-the-air broadcast.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear on that.
