Kirk Mellish retiring from WSB radio

It was announced this morning that Kirk Mellish will leave his daily weather forecasting duties at the end of July, staying on through the end of 2021 as a consultant. Christina Edwards, an AMS certified meteorologist and Atlanta native, will be WSB radio's new chief meteorologist. Mellish has been on WSB radio since 1987.

I heard it announced this morning, and you beat me to it. Kirk Mellish has been an important part of my WSB listening experience since I moved here in 1994. He has added a tremendous amount to the station.

I spoke with Kirk at length at the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame on the night he was inducted several years ago. He was very gracious, and I came away impressed with how nice he was. I wish him the very best in his retirement.

Under Apollo ownership, you might have expected that. I think WSB is smart to hire a separate meteorologist. It strengthens their image as the go-to station for news and weather.
Well, it enabled them to conquer WGST's News Monster and also hold off All News 106.7.

Does Christina have to do weather for other stations in the group as well?

I don’t believe Mellish ever has. I know B98.5 uses WSB-TV meteorologists. I’ve never heard a weather report on The River that I can remember.

I wonder if they will have her fill in on the TV side? They still haven’t replaced Katie Walls who left a little over a year ago.

Eboni Deon, WSB-TV - WSB-TV Channel 2 - Atlanta replaced her, but she hasn't been on much lately.

Is TV and radio still co-owned?
Yes. I think Apollo bought them in two separate transactions, so there would have been a short time when they weren't.

Cox Enterprises still owns the AJC, though.

Does Cox Enterprises still have an agreement with Apollo to continue to share news as they have done in the past?
Yes. However they decided not to move the AJC newsroom from Dunwoody to the radio/TV building on Peachtree. It’s moving a few blocks to the Cox HQ in Sandy Springs instead.

Keep in mind too that Cox retained an ownership interest in the radio and TV properties.
