96Rock Revived as Digital-Only Station

I don't impress with the audio quality of their stream. Soundprocessing if they use it, I barely hear it sounds flat and dull to me for a rock station.

I’m a huge fan of rock and alternative radio - By definition, this makes me a critic. With that being said, I found myself yawning while listening to 96 Rock. Very predictable. No “wow” or “been a minute since I heard that” moments during my three hour sample. No prog rock or deep cuts. Pretty straight forward Iheartradio classic rock channel stuff.
I would expect a bit more stretching on a so called “digital only” station.

It sounds like they are playing a deeper and harder playlist than 97.1 The River, with more newer rock (well into the 90s) but not as new or hard as Rock 100.5. In some respects it reminds me of Z93 in their classic rock days. Playlist ranges from 60s Beatles and Doors well into the 90s (STP, Nirvana, etc.).

I don't know if they would go full boomer and bring back Psychedelic Psupper/Psaturday/Psunday, but they seem to go older than either of the AOR OTA stations.

During my listening prog rock (except for Pink Floyd, they were playing a ton of that) was missing. But they did go deeper than the River, ("Time" in the case of PF) but that's not hard. They also went older and newer than I expected.

One thing I found amusing--in their short promo clip they said that Elton John would be part of the playlist. When 96 Rock flipped to Project Buzzkill, in their flip stunt they made fun of the fact that 96 Rock had been playing Elton John.

I do think they have an opportunity to differentiate themselves from the River more than they have out of the box.

What’s the satellite feed most classic rock stations do (Q106 - Macon & 100.7 RDU - Raleigh)? I don’t think it’s the same feed but sounds like it.
