Question about one show being on two different channels at the same time.

Earlier today I was going through the channels and saw that the show gunsmoke was airing on two channels at the same time from the same season. On the insp channel and GRIT at the same time and I was wondering if there are any rules or protections in place that would prevent the same episode from being aired during the same time slot on more than one channel.

My guess (and that's all it is), is that when one is dealing with shows as old as Gunsmoke, once you've purchased the episodes and have the rights to air them, there are few if any restrictions on when you can schedule them, if you need to ensure other networks aren't airing the same episodes at the same time, etc.

They should have some kind of universal agreement worked out that prevents the same episode form being aired at the same time on multiple channels.

Why would anyone care? You're going to only watch it on one channel unless you're a collector trying to DVR them all
Agreed. If this were a hot, top earning show or movie with lots of red tape and contract terms dictating when/where/how it can be aired, that'd be one thing....But it's Gunsmoke.

long ago, and this is what got a lot of the "superstations" knocked off cable, a rule called syndication exclusivity was enacted, so if say WGN had the rights to sat M*A*S*H , and your local station did too, the cable operator had to cut the feed from the out of market station when the out of market station was showing the same shot (not episode) at the same time. It also covered cable networks and local OTA stations that were must carry, the OTA could ask that the cable network be blocked too

Now the syndication agreements address exclusivity or in this case non exclusivity so that the same show or even episode can be on at the same time OTA or cable.

At this point I'm surprised Gunsmoke ( failing any colorization, editing etc that would allow a new copyright claim) is not falling into the public domain.

It isn't the type of show that is drawing huge numbers or a P1 that is going to bring you top tier advertisers..... unless you are getting good money from medicare supplemental insurance spots, adult diapers, or boner pills. You don't see those shows run in prime time that's for sure.... they are almost filler.

Both MeTV & Circle air episodes of "Bonanza" at 2:00PM ET\1:00PM CT, however, from what I can tell, they don't air the same episodes. Currently, MeTV is running the season 12 episodes, ones that were once in the "Lost Episodes" package & Circle is showing the season 1 episodes.

Like Star Trek and its various incarnations, Gunsmoke still makes money for CBS/Paramount, both in licensing to the different Classic TV Networks, and Home Video sales.

Who care about the same ancient show airing twice simultaneously? Three was being generous. 😆 The coincidence is highly unlikely to occur that often, virtually no one is going to be analyzing listings that closely, and those who do aren’t likely to be taking issue with a little quirk.

And that time slot guarantees an audience made up almost completely of retirees, and elderly retirees at that. When my dad was still alive -- and he lived to 98 -- he'd constantly be scrolling through the cable guide looking for vintage Western movies and shows. He'd watch whichever one appealed to him at that moment with absolutely zero concern over whether some other channel was airing a different episode.

I seen a few months ago Father Knows Best was on at the same time as antenna tv and FETV and it was the exact same episode. Also in the past like KDSM FOX 17 and KCCI CBS 8 both aired WWF Wrestling fox 17 aired it at 11am on Saturday with KCCI airing it at noon on Saturday. Today in northern Iowa both KGAN CBS 2 and kfxa fox 28 both air ring of honor wrestling
