940 ESPN Flip

Oh Wow ! That would be a flashback! Given the times what they are, and radio biz what it is vs. was, KYNO/1430 does a decent re-creation of KYNO The Big 13! on 1430. I'm anxious to hear what develops. Thank you, Do share more.

As a DXer and music fan, I'm happy to hear this. As a broadcaster I like it, as rare as it id.

I've heard heard 940 up here in Alaska.. in fact, it's the most common 940... just about every night at some varying level of intelligiblity.

I've heard their FM, KWDO 99..3 from Wyoming twice.

KFIG 940 audio with no external antenna, using my tunable loop its much better these days: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xjMfipLm-sPNyiiAot8hJaUTRbUWdVPj/view?usp=sharing

Reported tonight that 940 will flip to Oldies. 940 simulcast of KYNO?
Wow, oldies on a bigger signal, now I wonder what's going on 1430, I don't think its sports, it was reported yesterday that all Bulldogs sports will move to KCBL 1340 Fox Sports.

That will be a great thing to hear on 940 up this way at night. KFIG gets out very well into WA, except for those nights where CJGX GX94 in Yorkton is stronger.

KFIG could be more ‘70’s than KYNO, which seems to have settled in on more of a late 50’s early 60’s, which isn’t exactly boss radio. It’s time for a flip...Fresno radio is boring.

I totally agree, we need more 70s than what's offered now, that was my KYNO days, Jr. High and High School, Class of 79.

In light of a format change, are there any Valley AM's that would or should try out a change to all digital? Which stations would be most likely to do so?

Espn940 changed their FB cover page today. Doesn’t look as they are giving up sports. TV might know about other flips that are rumored and messed up.

Are they hiring local talent and djs to operate the new station and do community based morning shows? Thatd be a very rare but nice thing to see in this current state of radio.

Wondering why Fresno State would part ways with 940 and that big signal. That was one of the reasons they left KMJ, the big signal and a sports format.

KMJ is on a much better frequency and is the same day and night power as KFIG on 940. KMJ has an FM. KMJ covers about 50% more people in its 5 mV/m contour than 940 due to a lower frequency and a better antenna system.

The problem is that neither has a full signal FM, although KMJ-FM does cover about 95% of the Fresno MSA, but nothing much else.

KMJ is one of the rare AM stations on a regional frequency but running 50,000 watts 24/7, thanks to its directional antenna. 950 KJR Seattle and WWJ Detroit, also on 950, are two others that come to mind. Interesting that all three have only three call letters, indicating they date back to the 1920s, even though their boost to 50,000 watts only happened about 15 years ago.

So KMJ does have a better signal than 940 KFIG. Both have 4 tower directional antennas putting out 50,000 watts around the clock. But KMJ is lower on the dial.

The new deal with I-Heart Radio puts Fresno State Bulldogs Sports on multiple valley stations, KCBL 1340 Fresno, KRDU 1130 Dinuba/Visalia, KHTY 970 Bakersfield, KOSO 92.9 Modesto and KWSX 1280 Stockton, giving then better coverage than just one 50,000 watts Fresno station.

KRDU’s loyal following is not going to be happy with more disruptions. I had heard the original deal was football only with all other sports App based. Madera looks to be App dependent.

I have a feeling KRDU's following is loyal but small.. not minute but small. Pay for play religious stations don't have huge followings.
