So what do you suggest? The 1st amendment says Congress shall make no law. So the government can't impose any rules on news. The news system we have is free market, so advertisers pay for it based on audience, not based on facts or truth. People apparently have their own views on what are facts, and those views drive what gets reported in the news.
I didn't offer any suggestions, just my thoughts on the state of our current media (of all forms). As you stated the 1st Amendment is fairly clear on the matter.
The bigger problem we have with regards to the safety of the republic is when actual elected officials who are paid by the taxpayers and have access to the truth lie to the media. Or shall we say "mislead" the media. The wolf is in the henhouse right now. There is no way to fix misinformation in the news when the people we depend on for our safety and security are instead providing content for TV and radio entertainment shows. The source of the misinformation isn't the media. The media is the platform.
The only way to fix misinformation is for others to speak truth. Or at least their "truth." The fact is that few, if any, politicians tell the "truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." We have no dearth of information, true or otherwise. The problem we have is a population that chooses their sources according to their own political bent rather than as a means of determining truth and a new media that feeds on ratings rather than journalistic principles. "Truth" is determined by what attracts the most adherents in major market cities, primarily coastal megalopolises with a history of leaning toward having government solve problems that may have been created by government in the first place.
We are a Representative Republic but we have Democratic elections, for now, and judicial review that is supposed to protect civil rights. The "not a Democracy" talking point will come in handy the first time a state legislature overturns an election to install a Republican. Until somebody ends up with the same result as the President of Haiti.

There seems to be some confusion here between "medium" and "media." Radio is a medium. The people who too often distort information are members of the media.
WHLD as presently formatted, is insignificant. Five thousand watts of wasted RF daytime, one thousand watts of highly directional wasted watts at night. Your wireless garage door opener has more significance and greater purpose than what's on WHLD.
On the other hand, in the middle of the country, we pretend facts aren't real at all.
Said like someone who is absolutely sure that their "facts" are correct. Or at least politically correct.
Yes, hundreds of thousands of election workers denied Saint Donald a second term. I thought alternative facts went away with Kellyanne Conway.
