Boston Radio Ratings June 2021

WKLB up 2 full shares since March! WBWL still grinding along in the low 2s. No bump yet from the surprising first-place Red Sox for WEEI-FM, guess people prefer listening to the Sports Hub hosts talk about the Sox than those on the team's flagship station. 97.7 flat in its first book as WZRM compared to its last one as WKAF.

Do radio stations owners get a discount for subscribing to Nielsen with more than one station ?

I am noticing several Costa-Eagle Radio Ventures down the bottom

While it is just a hunch, I bet that Rumba 97.7 is likely billing no worse than WKAF was.

I doubt it is billing much of anything yet. New stations in a cluster will often bonus existing advertisers on the new station, and offering very cheep "pioneer package" spots is also common.

It takes 4 to 6 months to start getting agency attention if there is apparent ratings growth. Local direct accounts are not likely to buy a new station unless it is really cheap.

Groups sign global packages, so they get a better rate per station... just like on can of Coke at the 7-11 is more than the cost per can if you buy one of those 12 can cartons, and that is more per can than buying those 24 to 30 can boxes at Costco.

The rate also depends on market size as well as whether the station buys some of the additional services like programming packages and qualitative reports.

Afternoon drive (2 p.m.-6 p.m.): Felger and Mazz (first, 19.5); OMF (tied for fourth with KISS-108's Mikey V show, 4.8). That 19.5 is the largest three-month share I can recall for any show in the 12 years I've been covering this.
6-7 p.m.: The Baseball Hour hosted by Tony Massarotti (first, 12.7); Mut/Sox pregame show (10th, 3.6).
Evenings 7 p.m.-midnight: The Adam Jones Show and Sox/Bruins broadcasts into early June (second, 10.6); Mut, Red Sox games (eighth, 4.1).

Would that explain why English-language spots are being aired on Rumba as well as spots in Spanish? Advertisers not going the extra mile to reach out to listeners on a station they're not convinced that (a) they should even be on, or (b) anyone with money to spend is listening to in the first place?
 
this might be a question better posed in its own thread--but how does Audacy even begin to right this ship? I know these are just vanity 6+ numbers, but to have only one station in the top 10 can't be good for business. And that station (WMJX) has been sinking since Entercom took over.

WEEI is in JMN territory, which was where WODS (AMP) was when it flipped. BIG103 seems to be doing ok...but appears to only be taking share from WBOS, which was limited to begin with, and hasn't dented WROR or WZLX at all

Huh? The last time the Red Sox had a "cult-like" following was pre-1967, when only a few diehards cared about the team. Cults are generally small, and that won't generate ratings. Do you mean that a large number of fans have actually lost interest in the Sox or that they don't obsess over every result, managerial move and personnel decision the way they've done since the dawn of sports talk radio in Boston?

Ah, the "I am the world" fallacy! SiriusXM has somewhere south of 35 million subscriptions. There's no way enough of them could be concentrated in the Boston market to have a significant impact on any station's ratings. Any sentence beginning "I know many who ..." almost always has zero validity outside of the raw fact that x number of people that you know -- probably in double digits at best -- do in fact do what the person making that statement says they do.

Also, most of both WBZ-FM's and WEEI-FM's listenership is to talk shows, not play-by-play. SXM doesn't provide any of those, except as Red Sox network filler during rain delays.

BTW, I often listen to Sox games on SXM too, but only road games, so I can escape the nasal, humorless whinings of Joe Castiglione by listening to the other team's broadcasters.
 
I'm curious as to how Worcester's WWFX, "100FM The Pike", is doing ever since they brought in Mike Hsu (replacing Bruce Palmer), Mistress Carrie and changed their music to essentially become the new (old) WAAF. I no longer listen to The Pike as I hate the new music. It's all noise to me.

The only thing showing is their cume has dropped since the changes were made from 40,000 in the Boston report in March to 30,000 in June.

Their signal starts fighting with WBRS just east of I-495.

And that could be caused by as little as one or two meters in a single household. The PPM is totally unreliable for stations with a rating (not "share") in the 0.1 range.
 
Maybe they ought to include gambling as part of their programming.
As has been said once sports gambling is licensed in MA, it could well be--Audacy is putting their BetQL network on some of their AMs...don't know if they would displace ESPN on their 850 though
