1450 WCTC now on 93.5 FM

As of today, WCTC's new translator on 93.5 FM, W228DY in New Brunswick, is now on the air. It is transmitting from the WMGQ tower in Somerset. WCTC also has a backup AM transmitter on that tower, so I wonder if they will make it their main transmitter and decommission their separate, flooding-prone transmitter site in Highland Park.

They haven't updated their logo yet. Still pushing the heritage 1450. Don't know if they'd give up the site "on the banks of the old Raritan." Better ground wave there than on Veronica.

The 93.5 translator is putting out a stereo signal, but as of yet I haven't heard any stereo separation in the programming (not that there would be much with a talk format). No RDS either. The 1450 signal was in C-Quam AM Stereo until a few years ago, but isn't anymore.

Plus most of it is syndicated. So all you really have in stereo are the spots. At one time, their audio chain was strictly mono too.

The fact that they aren't promoting this makes me think that there's a format change or at least a soft reboot of sorts in the works.

Or, maybe they're waiting to finish working on it. The facility is still operating under its construction permit...no license to cover has been filed for yet.

IMO they need this badly. When I used to work in the area, there were places 5-10 miles from the tower where I would hear something behind WCTC…and no it wasnt anything bleeding from 98.3. Love it or not, Radio-locator shows a local contour for the Station and all these instances were within that first circle. (Just long enough ago I cant recall intersections where this would happen.)

Radio geek talking here, but to me it is cool to hear the elements and music beds in stereo even though the talk is in the center or piped out in mono.
Not that an ordinary listener would notice this...

I cannot imagine anyone is listening in general, let alone to whether or not something is in mono or stereo... ala "who cares." Great to see an AM station pickup an FM translator but since there is nothing generally appealing offered in terms of a format, I can't see this being of much interest. Beasley treats it for what it is, an afterthought. It's time has long come and gone. I wonder how WVIP feels about this recent co-channel addition?

The signal coverage of the new 93.5 FM translator is very good. But in addition to the superfluous stereo pilot tone, I also noticed they have a constant hum in their audio during network programming.

Do you think you should reach out to them and tell them? Maybe they don’t have as much time available in their day to listen as you do?
