How Low Can They Go? (Jun 6+)

92~Three KTAR continues its downward spiral: 3.6, 3.2, 3.1, and now 2.5. YIKES!

Meanwhile, Ancient Modulation 5~Fifty KFYI continues to kick butt: 4.5, 4.1, 3.8 and now 4.0

KMVP is doing the Rally The Valley with the Suns: 2.6 - 4.7. Shazam!!

Here are all the useless 6+ numbers compliments of Los Buckeye Boyz: Nielsen Audio Ratings

What in the wild, wild world of sports is going on with these beauty contest stats?

On the talking front, it would appear that shouting into a microphone about sports is even more popular than shouting into a microphone about politics (what with 98.7 beating AM 550).

Playing almost the exact same country hits seems to be working twice as well for the former Owens-owned station than the former hump-grabbers.

The two "Top 40" stations are sharing the middle of the pack with NPR. The kids today...they like the jazz and All Things Considered.

And what about that ratings bounce for the...well...Bounce? Has Sierra Hotel finally found something to do with their secondary rim-shot? Are they gonna do something with Mega to push it above the mighty 6+ numbers of classical KBAQ?

Finally, I scrolled down to the bottom and found Audacy's KOOL HD2. Are they really "alternative?" I haven't been able to listen to them, since I can't seem to find one of these HD radios. That's probably a new product. I'm sure it will catch on any day now.

Are people really listening to 98.7 for the sports talk, or the Suns PBP? None of the other sports talkers received any bump (can't really tell about KQFN since they don't subscribe to Nielsen and therefore their numbers aren't public). Like I said before, Jody Oehler's talent is being wasted on 910.

And they (the radio industry cheerleaders) say streaming hasn't made an impact on youth radio listenership. The hip-hop format is pretty much dead in many major cities. alternative rock has also seen a downfall.

Promotion. They do no outside promotion of the station. KAJM is capable of doing better.

My belief (which along with $10 probably will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks) is there's two factors at play:
- younger listeners are using new technology
- current pop & alt is terrible

Maybe it's because I'm reading too much Sean Ross, but the last time I heard pop doldrums like this was around 1990. If you believe that pop goes in 10 year cycles, this will soon give way to better music, but until that happens, what's on the charts right now will be forgotten as soon as possible. The world is looking for a new pop icon that everyone can agree upon and it's not here yet.

Local radio can be a part of today's culture if it chooses to, but it has to make that choice.

Like the crazy prices every street vendor charges for branded items, the Valley has gone bonkers for anything Suns. SportsParkinglot 98~Seven shot up in June thanks to all the interest in divisional playoff games.

We agree, Oehler's talent is wasted on SportsParkingLot 9~Ten. Los Buckeye Boyz also think Jacobs & Helly deserve better than SportsParkingLot 15~Eighty.

Wolfley & Oehler? Maybe I can start my day that way, if TPTB at 98.7 don't water Jody's takes down. I don't know how real the beef between him and Gambo still is at this time, which could be a deal-killer. I still like Bickley & Marotta. At least 1580 has some FM translators. Leave the syndication and pay-to-air shows to 910 and 1060, unless Roc buys the station he's wanted to own himself for years (what about that AM with a "full power translator" that's for sale? That Right Toyota money has to be enough to buy it for cash).
Someone last month suggested it's because of Broomhead.
It could be that, or it could be a combination of him and the Beans & Rice overkill.

Has something changed with Dave's show in the last four months?
Annoying as always, but now it's branded as "The Ramsey Show". This allows Mr Beans & Rice to hone his exit strategery while keeping his name top of mind and raking in the bucks. As far as the Nurse and I are concerned, time for a lineup change...and we're talking everything after 8am.

You know..."New Pop Icon" is not a bad name for an alt band. šŸ˜

I agree Doc. For the life of me I don’t understand why KTAR decided to cut the hours on their best program, Arizona’s Morning News, by ending it at 8 for Mike Broomhead. They need to restore it back to it’s rightful time slot of 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM, Broomhead can still do 9-12 I guess, and then the rest of the day should be revamped. No more tape-delayed, non-local Beans and Rice radio with Dave Ramsey from 12-2, change out Gaydos and Chad and bring in some new live and local blood while also restoring Arizona’s Afternoon News from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM! For evenings from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, I would love something live and local ala KFI in Los Angeles and even KOGO in San Diego with KOGO at night. From 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM, they don’t need to be local anymore since nobody really listens then anyway so I think they would be better running the full live show of Red Eye Radio from 10:00 PM to 3:00 AM instead of just two random hours of the show like they do now. Red Eye Radio live is a lot better than the tape delayed hodgepodge of Dave Ramsey and Chad Benson. Heck even Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis would be a vast improvement!

KMVP is riding the wave of Suns Mania, and will be back to a 2 share come August. I don't see what anyone should be surprised by that.

As for KTAR's slide, I think most people are tired of hearing about Covid-19(especially about the new Delta variant), the worker shortage, the truck driver shortage, the car microchip shortage, the gas shortage, the rental car shortage, the chicken wing shortage, the bacon shortage, the oxygen shortage, the lumber shortage, the blood shortage, the pet food shortage, the aluminum shortage, the RV/boat/bicycle shortage, inflation, etc. Doesn't that become depressing after a while? They should have been focused on the Suns, too. That's what people in the valley are most excited about. And most everyone is hungry for some kind of excitement after a difficult last couple of years.

As for KKFR, many CHRs around the country are struggling, especially Rhythmic CHRs, and they're signal only covers a portion of the market. Ahh...the memories of KKFR dominating 30 years ago on a city-grade signal resonate in my brain. What a shame.

101.1 The Bounce sounds great, and I have a lot of respect for John Candelaria, but you can't expect much more than mid 2's or a 3 share for a station you can't hear east or south of downtown. I believe if the signal covered the whole valley it would have at least a 4 share.

Speaking of rimshots, I think it's remarkable the KOAI is within a full point of KOOL. Especially with KYOT still in the top-3.

Since switching from the previous All Train Wreck format, the Wow Factor has done remarkably well. The station's rimshot signal at 95~One is assisted greatly by the translator at 94~Nine. KOAI has sucked most of the life out of KAZG, resulting in furloughed miners milling around Lumberyard 14~Forty's canal side transmitter site.

Saw this on John Sebastian's Facebook page:

The monthly June Nielsen is our best yet for The WOW Factor.
#1 55+ All stations All week!
3 Months in a row #1 55+!!
#2 55+ Music station AM Drive!
#2 55+ Music station Middays!
#1 55+ All stations PM Drive!
#1 55+ All stations All Weekend!
Weekends almost double #2 station!

Dave Ramsey can run excerpts of a show from 20 years ago, and it would sound the same as today (if the topics haven't become obsolete). I never understood how his show got so popular.

It won't be as bad as you think. Even if the Suns get eliminated in Game 6, there will be a month window between the end of the Suns season and the start of the Cardinals preseason. And unlike the dunce-cap D-backs this season, the Cards PBP attracts listeners, win or lose.

One thing we've learned is that if people like you, you can do just about anything and they'll still stick with you.
