Developer proposes $60M apartment complex on Emmis radio site in Whitestown - Indianapolis Business Journal

Lafayette-based IG Development has submitted conceptual plans to redevelop roughly 27 acres of the Emmis Communications radio tower and transmission property in Whitestown with 408 apartments.

From the article:
Snedeker said Emmis plans to remove the towers and transmission facilities that currently broadcast WFNI-AM 1070 as more and more of the property is developed.

“We are currently exploring other broadcast sites for 1070,” Snedeker said in an email.
 
Boom, there goes another one. 4 tower day at 50 kW,6 tower night at 10 kW...indeed this one is worth more dead than alive.
 
I'd think that's very likely. Maybe even more listeners on on WIBC-HD2 than 1070.
 
Does anyone SERIOUSLY think they have plans to rebuild this...even at lower power? There are already plenty of AM signals in Indy not making any money.

after noting the Fan sports format contineus on 2 translators and an HD2 sub channel.. no, i missed that earleir today.. and wouldve thought the AM would come back.. but not now. I wouldnt be surprised at all to see the AM disapepar
 
Well, that happened fast. I figured they would find a diplex partner or other solution to stay on the air before shutting down the Whitestown TX site.

But, much like what I said when 1560 in New York went dark for similar reasons, it won't take long for people to get out of the habit of tuning to 1070. If it's dark 6 months, there's probably not a compelling reason to bring it back at all.

Is one of the Catholic networks in the market for an Indy signal? I could see that happening. They seem to buy (even overpay) for signals like that, assuming it can be rebuilt somewhere in some capacity.

That is one of the most likely prospects. A Catholic network bought a CP for1120 at Limon CO a few years back and built it out to 50 kW daytime only to serve Denver and Colorado Springs.

That's likely to be harder with 1070. I don’t know or remember all of the specifics, but that signal was already shoehorned in. Indy got the short shrift when it came to AM allocations. It had fewer than 10 AM's licensed to it, and virtually none of them cover the entire city after dark anymore.

From what I understand, 1070’s current facility wouldn’t be technically feasible today because the city has outgrown the nighttime coverage area. Maybe Emmis, or a potential buyer, could relicense it to Zionsville or another smaller community to get around a problem like that, but rebuilding that station at anywhere near like it is today is going to be really difficult, if not outright impossible.

They bought an existing station with a CP to move.. and theyve had a few teething problems because the site is remote... station will sign on but with no audio, its lost audio in the middle of the day.. tis not signed off.. theyve got most of the kinks worked out

Looking at the daytime pattern, it's almost non-directional on the map with a slight null toward Hannibal, Louisville and probably Sarnia. It still takes 4 towers to accomplish that.. I'm not sure about even 500 nights. You've got Chattanooga, Birmingham, Sarnia, some 1080s and 1090s. If a new owner can't get a translator that's another problem....should Emmis put it back on, 34 night watts would probably be fine.
 
It's actually about the equivalent of 5+ kW IDF from about 270 degrees to 45 degrees. The Groundwave Maps make it look more nondirectional than it is.

If you move SE, the nondirectional possible Day power would be greater. If you were the equivalent of nondirectional at Night to the present Night pattern null IDFs, it could only be about 15 watts. Depending on new skywave model and treaty changes, that might increase some, but not that much probably. With a three tower slight dogleg to simulate the major lobe direction and asymmetric nulls, maybe 250+ watts.

Suppose one wanted to be really adventurous. Bring it back digital only. Do something unique. Music on AM. 12,500 ND days. 2,000 watts directional towards Dayton and Cincinnati nights.
