CNN continues to dive

This isn't a good look for the Atlanta-based news network. It is evident that a wholescale makeover is perhaps in the works.

How is it currently ranked vs. the other 24 hours "news" networks? As has been stated previously in various discussion threads, CNN usually gets a ratings boost and sometimes does best when there are mass-interest news events and breaking news. Right now all things considered, we're in a relatively slow news cycle.

Take the January 6 Capitol insurrection as an example: On that day, CNN had its highest viewership in that network's history. CNN pulled 5.221 million viewers in total day ratings. Fox News by comparison came in third place with 2.988 million average viewers.

Also CNN has other competitors to deal with on the streaming side such as CBSN which is following CNN's old playbook, I knew CNN+ was in the planning stages. NewsNation by Nexstar wants some of CNN's former audience too. EW Scripps Newsy wants CNN's former audience too for news.

Agreed, CNN is the go-to for urgent breaking news. But to win you need to be on top during normal non news days.
Thanks for updating your original post and adding the link. Originally when your first sentence was the only thing showing on the site, I wasn't sure what you were referencing or what your comment was based on. This helps..

In the 25 to 54 demo, it's in the middle. Below Fox, above MSNBC:

The cable news audience is very old. Maddow is the only show in the Top 5 other than the Fox prime time lineup.

My view is CNN's approach to talk is very dull. VERY dull. It needs a makeover.

We'll see what happens when Discovery takes over Warner Media. My bet is they recognize the value in what CNN does.

Agreed too I seen Fox News and MSNBC mentioned as top in Cable News ratings on non news days. Although in the past 8 months we seen Fox having to respond to new Right wing competitors all fighting for Trump fans or Trump allies running in the 2022 election such as Newsmax and OAN.

Which is?

But wait some of CNN's former audience could be going to BBC News and Al-Jazeera if they want international news. Especially here in the USA if one wants international stories it's split between Al-Jazeera and BBC News.

Keep in mind this is not just a cable news issue. Ratings for news/talk radio stations have also dropped since February. Some of that was the death of Rush Limbaugh. Some of it is the lack of daily talking points from the former president. Some of it caused by the rise of podcasts for this kind of content. Late night TV talk show ratings are also down.

Most people aren't on the edge of their seat waiting to see the latest spicy tweets from Biden as they were with the former guy, so that's another reason not to tune in political news/talk shows.

I think you mean BBC World News. BBC News is the name of the BBC's all-news channel for its domestic audience.

This is nothing new or different. If you had the proper data, including demo and timing breakouts, you would see that all TV; cable, network, and local stations, take at least a 30% drop once Summer hits. Last Summer was less of a drop because people were captive at home. That's why Fall is the time of the season new shows debut..

And the only way that you can do that is by having talk shows and eschew news altogether.

Even NewsNation has given up on the news idea and is adding talk shows with Leland Vittert and Dan Abrams, but it won’t help their prolonged allergy to ratings (which have utterly imploded since the half-hearted conversion from WGN America began last September).

WGN is trying to compete in a crowded news tv news environment. I don’t wish them ill will but they really have a tough row to hoe.

There are actually a lot of choices for international news available in the US. Besides the ones you mentioned, there’s France 24, DW, Sky News, Euronews, i24 News, NHK World, Arise News, WION, RT (yeah, I know)… even CNN’s International feed, which tends to be a bit more headline-focused than its US-based counterpart. Plus channels like ABC Australia or Arirang that focus on a particular country or region.

Most of those are available on cable or digital OTA in some markets. All but a couple of them stream for free.
