Audacy producing "Training Camp Live"; Buffalo Bills are persona non grata

Not just the Bills, but also WGR was not included in this project. Interesting because sports betting is legal in New York.

Perhaps they forgot that they own a sports station with an NFL team in Buffalo.

Let's see: The show will be produced using stations in....
New York
Chicago
San Francisco
Philadelphia
Dallas
Boston
Washington DC
Pittsburgh
Kansas City

Mostly top-10 markets. And of the two that aren't, the smallest, KC, is still almost twice the size of Buffalo?

They didn't forget. Audacy is focused on the bigger markets. CBS first abandoned the smaller cities before getting out of Radio altogether. Buffalo can't compete with cities like Dallas, Boston, DC, etc... Those places have the Football Palaces that generate huge money.

As for gambling, the New Orleans Superdome just changed names. Mercedes Benz has been replaced by the Caesars Superdome. The NFL knows what generates the revenue...

Methdome
X Arena
Cannabis Pavilion
Oxy Palace
Xanax Stadium
Fent Center
GHB Garden

All big money makers.

Good. Fewer distractions for the Bills. I'm sure that the Bills staff is happy with their decision.

Features take time and talent to produce. The reduced sports and production staff that remain at Corporate Parkway are probably maxed out with daily, ongoing feature production. There are countless sources for daily Bills news, insights and commentary. Most of these are on-line and more immediate than a radio package produced late in the evening or early in the day that could be obsolete three hours later.

Different sources are speculating that the Bills could relocate to Austin TX. The Bills need a new stadium in Buffalo to have any chance of remaining viable there. Austin is booming with Silicon Valley Tech people coming in. The Raiders just left Oakland recently and the NFL follows the money. The Bills will try to extort the city and taxpayers lose either way...

Sports Illustrated says chances are "dubious," because of proximity to Dallas:

How legitimate is that Buffalo Bills possibility? Dubious, for a number of reasons - one of which includes Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. NFL owners are "territorial.'' Austin is part of "Cowboys Country,'' and the power of the Jones family and the Cowboys - power both in the NFL and in the political world - would likely be used to prevent such an intrusion.

Actually Houston is 30 miles closer, and Houston is also in the AFC. They have a stronger case to object.

Cool your jets, everyone… The Bills aren’t going anywhere. Full stop. Like the story said this is just a step in the negotiations for a new stadium. One that - like it or not - will be taxpayer-funded.

Florida has 3 NFL teams. Texas could easily support a third team. Austin is rapidly growing with Tech money.

The Chargers, Rams, and Raiders have all moved in recent years. The NFL views things through a different lens than the locals in Buffalo. The bigger Austin TV market is another factor. Nothing is guaranteed yet...

NYS is not likely to let it's only native NFL team leave the state. For as much as the stadium will cost over the years it's amortized, the Bills will generate even more in revenue. This is simply a negotiating tactic. We've been down this road before.

Only native team? NY Giants and Jets. Sure, the stadium is across the river in Jersey. It's still the #1 market.

Buffalo is not the center of the NFL universe despite what local fans think. Time will tell how this plays out...

When was the last time the Giants and Jets were relevant in the NFL?

You're welcome.

If this is tax payer funded, tax payers should get a dividend on profits. Total bull that a billionaire cannot fund his own company.

Buffalo is one of the smallest cities in the nation, and certainly not wealthy. NYS is already taxed up the wazoo for services that benefit everyone, which I am ok with

‘But funding the entire Bills stadium does not benefit everyone. The Pegulas are Billionares. They should pay, or give taxpayers a dividend from profit.

I have a membership in a private Pegula speakeasy downtown, paid my thousands upfront, went there 3 times, then they closed for covid. No notice, no expected open date, no communication, no nothing.

‘They essentially took the membership money without ever offering a reimbursement.

‘Let these rich bastards pay for the things they make them billionaires .

taxpayers did not pay for my radio stations, although the FCC sets standards the must me followed in terms of serving the community

There are a lot of ways in which cities benefit from owning stadiums. The most obvious is they can lease it out for other events and they keep the money. They charge the team rent. They get a percentage of concessions. They own the parking lot. They get a percentage of the stadium naming rights.

Then there are the intangibles, which is attracting tourism, the hotel rooms used by visiting teams and fans, the additional people shopping in local stores and eating in restaurants. All of that contributes to sales tax fees and other taxes.

The way most cities finance stadiums is to impose certain use taxes on game tickets, parking fees, rental car fees, hotel room fees, and other things people from outside the area do. The main goal is to have the visitors to Buffalo pay for the stadium, not the local residents. So typically this kind of thing doesn't come out of local property taxes. This will all be discussed at the city council meeting when the city decides on this proposal. These are usually open to the public.

Taxpayers own the frequencies that you're licensed to use. You're just a renter.

NY didn't pay for the stadium. NJ did. NY spent a lot more money on new stadiums for the Yankees and Mets. Upstate ought to get equal consideration.

Everybody thinks that these billionaires are sitting on a mountain of ready money. If the Pegulas are worth $5-billion it's got a lot to do with the value of the Bills (well over $1-billion) and the Sabres (yeah, not nearly as much) as well as all the money they've invested in downtown Buffalo, their numerous gifts to multiple institutions, and their "real" businesses. Look at your own net worth. How much cash could you come up with if pressed? Can the Pegulas come up with $2-Billion (low estimate on a real stadium cost) out of pocket without selling a bunch of assets? Unlikely. So, sell the Bills and build a stadium? What are the odds that the new owners would keep them here?

Perhaps everybody should ratchet down the rhetoric a bit, mostly because the people who really know what's going on aren't the ones blowing smoke like a local newspaper reporter. At least read this for a reasonable assessment of the process:

That is a very valid point. And one not well understood by "the public" and even many legislator.

The misconception that rich people have loads of cash is widely prevalent. There have been recent initiatives to tax the wealthier people a portion of their net worth, an idea which is totally infused with ignorance. Nobody who owns a business has loads of cash on hand, and if taxed they would have to sell part of their business every year and would eventually lose control of it or have to sell it.

The on field performance has nothing to do with revenue. Dallas has been mediocre for years, but they get national ratings. The Modern NFL requires Football Palaces. If Buffalo wants to stay "relevant", they have to build one. By the way, The Giants have some Super Bowl wins in their history. The Bills have had one good season in 25 years...
